new lights, old lights side by side

All I can say is that I'm glad I have a 2002! Call me old fashioned, but I don't get this stuff with black inside the headlights. Anything inside a headlight should be a mirror finish shiny chrome!

    tint questions

Ummm, I think you have it backwards. The tint % number actuallly means the % of light transmitted . So a 20% tint is darker than 35. So I think you mean you have 20% in the rear and 35% in the front (which are the legal limits in many places). If you are going to go to the trouble of...

How many miles can you get on 1 tank?

Ummm, no, what that means is that half on the guage just does not equate to half a tank... but something less than half a tank left when the guage shows 1/2. I have seen this on many cars... gas guages and gas tanks are simply not linear or very accurate....

    Has anyone seen this yet?

I think the guy would get more action if he advertised the car for parts rather than sound shady by suggesting it can be made roadworthy again. There is a lot more than $3500 in usable parts there... maybe $10K or more worth. Of course it's a hassle to sell it piece by piece, and a wrecker...

How many miles can you get on 1 tank?

I can't believe there is so much discussion around such a meaningless question. You never fill up a full tank (unless it dies and you are rolling up to the pump when you are totally out of gas). When the fuel light first comes on, you might have 8-12 litres left in the tank. Neither the guage...

    Side-View Mirrors...issue with them???

I have the seat on my P5 latched in the rearmost notch, and I do find both mirrors have to be set to the furthest out position....which is also what you found in your test drive....but if that setting at the limit is the correct adjustment (it is for me, and it sounds like it was for you) then...

So what problems have you experienced so far?

1 minor prob in 4 months... My wife's P5 has been defect-free for 4 months... except for a minor complaint about a mouldy smell for a minute when first turning on the air conditioning. Haven't decided whether to have it checked out at the dealer....

    Nitpicks with Auto Protege5

How about you forget that the car even has cruise? Then all your nagging 'problems' will go away. I have an automatic P5 as well, and would not think of ever using cruise. Can't think of anything that distracts more from the driving experience in any car. If you are hung up on cruise...

    2 questions about the P5

The stock Dunlop tires are far superior in snow than the Michelin crap that comes on Hondas ( I have driven Hondas for years). No comparison actually. I actually replaced the Michelins on my Honda several months ago with the same Dunlops that are stock on the P5 (my wife's car).

    Paint problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While they should remove the word 'metallic', they can then legally call it anything else they want such as 'premium' colour charge... it's just a marketing ploy to get more money from you when you go to close the deal... and keep the advertised price of the car as low as possible. They have...

    Paint problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: paint My guess is the 'paint surcharge' for all P5 colors other than white or red was just a 'marketing decision' my Mazda. Translation: A way to get a little more money from you using a 'hidden' charge most people find out about in negotiations at the dealership. They had to have some...

    Who has a Auto or A/T Protege5?

Got an Auto P5 for my wife 3 months ago. Auto trannys have come a long way in the last few years, with 4-speeds having taken over from 3-speeds as the norm. I used to drive stick shift excusively, but really do not miss it since being 'forced' to get Automatics as my wife has no inclination to...

    O/D on or off ?

At low speeds, makes no diff. All the 'o/d off' does is prevent it from going into 4th. This might be useful in some situations like when you want the engine to assist in braking while descending a long/very steep hill. I generally like to keep the engine revving low, and if I need...

    Mazda Service problems - Help!!!

Like I said above, I agree they could have handled it better. First of all they never should have said they were doing anything for 'free' without knowing whether the problem was truly covered by warranty. After they said the repair was 'free' , they were obligated to advise before doing...

    Mazda Service problems - Help!!!

I don't really blame a dealer for trying to recover their costs for diagnosing a problem that is not caused by a defect in the vehicle, but by a modification of yours. But they should have gone about it in a different way.... they should have offered to install the original hoses and refund...

    Canadian INVOICE prices...

Exactly. Have them break out the final price into each invidual item . I found they tried to add in the $105 paint charge for my red P5 (there is *no* colour surchage for red) and $100 or so for "Protector Plus" theft protection ( all glass is etched with a number that is cross-referenced to...

    Canadian INVOICE prices...

For some reason there seems to be a surplus of P5s on the dealers lots (in the Toronto area anways) ... cars that were manufactured 6 months ago or more. So it should be a great time to get a deal, with them wanting to unload 2002 stock. $1500 right off the top without even haggling is amazing...

    Paint problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does your car happen to be yellow? First off.yellow does not have clearcoat.. at least not the Canadian "Sunburst Yellow"". Having said that , I recall someone else having the same problem on the front fascia/bumper with paint flaking off. Maza re-painted it under warranty. Just see your...

    bird s*** destoryed my paint..=(

If the enamel is truly damaged (no improvement with repeated cleaning), can't think of anything that will fix this other than professional touch-up. Tough lesson learned. I think everyone should be forced to read a car owners manual from beginning to end at least once. In the Mazda Protege 5...
