where does the air for the stock intake come from?

if you lift up the hood and look down to the area behind the top grill, there is a black piece of plastic there which makes a flat tray between the metal frame and the plastic grill piece. ok now if you look at the position of the stock air intake and imagine when the hood is closed down.... there doesn't seem to be much place for air to come into the intake besides from coming up from the bottom of the engine bay and then looping back around to the front.

so my question is has anyone drilled holes into the plastic tray thing to make air flow more directly to the stock air intake from the front top grill area?

or has this been asked a million times already?

sabrelli are you on the astina gt forum too? if so i saw the guy with the blue SP20 and he has done this mod.
have you done this mod too?
is it worth it? or are the effects only psycological? (i can't spell)
and what would i use to stop the water from getting up into there?
i havne't had time to read up all the posts related to the topic.

Don't worry about water and the stock intake. Even if the water could make it to the stock airbox, it would have to be blown up two inches before it could make it to the filter. I would suggest that this mod might be... as you said... more mental than a real power adder. Even just changing the stock flat air filter for a flat K&N or other brand would probably yield a better increase. In theory, you are correct, cold air would make for more performance and yes Ram Air in theory is good as well. I'm just concerned that all this work could yield 1 HP or none at all. I don't think there is a risk of reducing power or any negative. Later...Brian ( Keep us Posted )

Yes, this was discussed a week or so ago in a thread that just ended. I drilled that piece. About 2 dozen holes and I'm sure that above 40mph there is some air in from the grill that gets up there now. It will be a free feel good mod as I didn't notice or expect any gains. But it can't hurt. I autocross with an auto tranny and this year I don't want to lose torque on the lowend by getting a CAI since I can't pick my shift points. Although I'm hoping locking out overdrive will help a lot.

yeh bro, im on the astina gt forums.
yes ive done the mod....the gains arent THAT spectacular but cutting the plastic alone.
u also need to make a scoop which guides the air comin in from the front grill and guiding it up towards the gain. i know 2 ppl who have done it and and said they can easily notice the improvement. to see wot this scoop looks like,

i'm gonna try this maybe next weekend when i have some free time. in the meantime i'm gonna try to find some kinda tubing to put into the cut place that would direct the airflow from the grill up to the intake.

sorry about dragging up an old thread but I just got around to doing this mod.

I cut along the front and sides of the locatiion indicated in the thread http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/sh...77&page=5&pp=15 and using a grill lighter to soften the back edge I bent the plastic down to direct the airflow up toward the intake snorkel. My question is did anyone that did this also drill holes through the front of the grill as well? see attached pictures

Yes, I had drilled out those spots also just to get some air scattering in through there.
