removing heatshield

ok so the heatshield underneath my shifter has been pissing me off rattling at random rpms, has anyone just taken the damn thing off?

Oh.....when I read this I was thinking about the header heat shield....do you mind of I add a question to your thread?

The header heat shield, can you take it off? If you can't, can you paint it with an engine paint?

There are some members here that have painted the exhaust manifold heat shield, it looks neat.

BTW: All heat shields are worthless.

Not sure how it works on a mazda but the honda ones leave holes. It's a little hotter in that area of the engine bay, but it didn't effect performance. Just take it off, run it around the block and see what happens.

Ceej, you can use any high-temp engine paint. I think some members have recommended 500* or better. I don't know if there is a high-temp primer, but if so I'd use that too. As far as affecting anything by removing it; Engine bay temps will rise a bit, but I can't see it being too much. If it is a problem, put it back on. Not like you're hanging out under there. I would actually think removing the tranny heat shield would be more of a problem, with more heat coming into the passenger compartment. Just my .02

Not a problem. I'm actually debating whether or not to paint mine since I plan on getting Wagner's shorty header, but I can't stand looking at it. And once I paint my valve cover, it'll really look like ass. I also thought about some sort of metal polish.......

I painted mine with black high-temp, I think it has lost some of it's blackness and it's a little discolored now, but it's better than the crap it was before.

If you use 1200 degree high heat paint it wont fade or anything. Just remember to let it dry before you put it back on and then go for a spirited ride around town to heat the thing up real good

lol, when I painted my heatshield(I tried to polish it, but it looked like s***, so I painted over my "work"), I took a ride a little too soon and got fumed out by the paint! Here's a pic of it with silver Hi-Temp paint.

yea you can take the heatshield underneath your shifter out, I did it when i was installing a shortshifter

when i removed my header shield the stock headers were rusted??? ew

You won't be f**ked. However, the paint will be. I said to use 500* paint based on what I thought I read in the "How-to". I'd now suggest, if you're going to paint your heat shield, use the highest temp paint you can find. Or a darker color. Or else...........................

Or forget about painting it altogether. Get it plated or powder coated instead. Or install a header and forget about the shield. But to say you're f**ked is going a little overboard.
