My 2018 CX-5 audio wall build

I know this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but a few of you followed me in early stages of adding bass so I figured I’d share some photos of my build. I still have more work to do (proper door panels, and adding the other 20 tweeters and 6 more mids, probably moving up to a JP83 and a jp10.4 to replace the jp13.2ab as I feel like I’d benefit from a bit more power, waiting on new alternator to come in still, ). Car is doing 155db+ from 23-29hz, and 157db+ in the mid to high 30s. Total rated wattage across everything is around 13k watts, but if you know these amps they can easily do double that.

You don't have a DSP? Dude, get on that. Even a basic one will take you to the next level.

Did you get a mic to help tune it?

I use a MiniDSP Umik1 for measurements, and I use Room EQ Wizard software (free!) to help figure out the processor settings.

Not at this point, I still have some work to do getting everything in. Using the DSP purely for the crossovers. At 155+db I don’t expect any sort of SQ, goal was strictly SPL so as long as I can hear everything and I’m in safe ranges for each driver…I’m happy.

I don't know a thing about all that stuff but enjoyed paging through a peek at all your work. That looks quite involved! Thanks for sharing. 😁

holy damn. i wish i had friends like you. my wallet would take a BEATING! i have installed HU's, speakers, and subs. but nothing this involved.

I'm sure that this system sounds FANTASTIC, but damn, that's crazy!

Are you married? What's the significant other think of this?
No significant other, no kids.
Hey, where's your spare tire?
No spare tire, just AAA and roadside if I get a flat I can’t quickly plug and fill with a portable air pump. 90% of flat tires can be fixed with a plug kit faster than most people can swap on the spare.

Along with the 200lbs of sound deadening stuff, what would you estimate the rest of the equipment weighs?

14 sheets of wood @ 70lb each is 980lb, figure 900lb after waste.
2 gallons of wood glue and 32 tubes of PL Max is probably about 60lb.
The subs weigh 226lb.
The amps are probably about 200lb.
Lithium is about 150lb.
All the wiring is about 400lb.
Deadening is 200lb.

Roughly 2100lb

You used 14 sheets of plywood? Is that double thickness 3/4" for the box? 14 sheets of 4'x8' plywood, really?

How come you went with plywood rather than MDF?

Again, that's crazy and impressive!

Did you, or are you planning on, beefing up the suspension for the additional weight?

Basic birch veneer 7 layer ply. Yes everything is minimal double layered, with baffle being triple layered and roof being triple layered for the front half and 8 layers at the rear above the port. MDF would have been significantly heavier and wouldn’t hold up as well in Florida rain and humidity.

Suspension will be redone once it starts to fail. Figured no real reason to beef it up until it’s needed. But will likely go full airbags when the time comes. Thought about switching to the cork sport lowering springs just for the 40% stiffer spring…but undecided there. I haven’t had any issues with bottoming yet 🤞
