GI: Replacement exhaust manifold

interesting so sort of a thumper manifold look i can dig it. i might have to hold off on putting my 2871 on till i pick one of these up. pending final price of course.

Does anyone really plan on running the kind of boost that benefits from an external wastegate? I'd imagine it is only beneficial once your airflow exceeds the capacity of the internal wastegate, which would then cause boost creep and if beyond the capacity of the turbo, excess heat, and restriction.
I suppose if you were also running a boost controller with a lot more boost than the spring, an external would be able to keep from cracking early.

Of course, there is always the obvious, "the giant turbo I have doesn't have an internal wastegate."

Why doesn't anyone make an aftermarket electronically controlled wastegate?

it doesn't matter what boost level you run you will always benefit by choosing a external wastegate over a internal. You get better boost control and eliminate the spiking that you get with an internal. Not to mention you get rid of the turbulence at the mouth of the s pipe.

I'll buy the turbulence, but why is it "better" controlled? I assume the spiking comes from the delay in boost pressure getting back to the WGA and opening the gate. Why would an external eliminate this? It still requires a boost source from the manifold. The actuator is integrated into an external, but I don't see why it would be any more reactive than a metal rod.

the main difference in boost control is one your trying to vent the exhaust with an internal wastegate 2 inches before it reaches the turbine. Not to mention how small the port is on a internal wastegate compared to say a 38mm tial wastegate. With a external wastegate you are venting the exhaust gasses from the collector before it even reaches the inlet of the turbo.

EWG can vent and regulate boost better due to the bigger ports and are less prone to boost creep and to spike high. Plus I've lost track of how many internal wastegate actuators im on.. I think its 5 or 6.. either way its a pita to change those out and adds up quickly. Not to mention its a HUGE pita on these cars to change out.

Do you go through them because the exhaust gunks up the axle of the flap and they get stuck open or closed?

weak springs that can't hold an control boost(ATP), pin hole leaks that whistle(ATP and stock), exhaust housing failing due to the flap backing out. ect ect.. im just sick and tired of dealing with it... I could of paid for this manifold and EWG just about with as much money as ive wasted dealing with internal wastegate bs. I'm currently on the forge wga and well its boost creep city. Can't go more then 3/4 throttle over boosting in the upper rpms. Either way lets not junk of this thread. if you want to find otu more just pm me.

Interesting, my stock wastegate died after 20,000 miles, I replaced it with an ATP and now have 85,000 on it with no problems.

Since readjusting my Forge it doesn't spike unless the car isn't fully warmed up. I removed the cats but am still on the stock S pipe so I haven't noticed any boost creep but maybe if I find a CS S pipe I will find it (not that I want it).

I can't wait to get a new exhaust mani with an EWG bung.

I had no problems with the forge and was content with it.. that is untell i ditched the factory s/j-pipe and midpipe.
Edit: at first i had horriable boost spikes but that lasted 2-3 days and it was gone.. almost like it had to break in or something. Called forge on it and they were puzzled as well.

I have an update!

Lots of progress has been made. I already had the jig made for assembling the manifold itself, but now I also have a jig built for cutting the pieces for making the custom merge collector that I need. This afternoon I got the prototype collector assembled (but not totally finished) and I mocked up all the runners. They will get tacked tomorrow and I'll take more pics. I'll be shipping the first customer manifold within a week or two. This thing is going to flow and look awesome. I'm excited.
