auto P5 ebrake handle removal *help!*

I would like to remove the existing oem ebrake handle on my auto P5, and replace it with an aftermarket one (maybe go with cf momo handle?).

I just spent the last hour searching through countless threads for an answer, and came up with nothing.

How do you mod the oem auto ebrake handle?!

thanks in advance. (attn)

Those momo handles are HAWT. I want one too. I think ScratchNSniff has one, and he can tell you how to do it. I think you just pull out on the handle and it pops off, but I make no promises as to whether that is actually how it works. You should take some pics and post them up for future reference.

thanks for the reply. too bad for me though, I dont have my car with me to take pictures since Im away at school. These are pics I found online of a couple rides with the same ebrake handle set up.

Also, I havent tried pulling the handle off yet, but it really doesnt look like its going to come off since its connected to the lever part. I looked at the service manual on floptical.net, section 04-12, and it from the looks of it... the handle does not come off.

Hey aznsebass,

Heres a picture of my e-brake handle

If this is what you want to do. You will have to ruin (cut) your oem handle off. See pic below

My tip to you is mask off your button at the end of your e-brake handle. I scratched my when cutting the handle off. Hope this helps.

Can you elaborate a little? It looks like you pulled the whole handle off...why did you have to cut it then?

daveb,

thanks for the reply. i greatly appreciate the pictures and help. i have a couple more questions now i guess...

1. in order to remove the plastic "casing", is it simply held in place with a bolt? after reviewing the service manual, it looks to me that if you unscrewed whatever was holding the plastic piece in place, you can then pull it off? is that correct? would it be entirely necessary to cut and split the handle apart?

2. also, I read in a few threads that an adapter was needed, the same one momo sells that they have listed for the miata. is this true?

3. I read that some people, like yourself, purchased the ebrake boot. besides having it feed through the slot, how is it secured in place?

thanks again!

Yes, MazdaSpeeder is right...I do have the Momo Handle/boot/adaptor installed...

1. This is not the only way...I pulled mine straight off...you will have to use some side to side/back and forth, but it does pull right off...it is a tight fit though...this will allow you to put back on the stock one if you ever need to again...

2. Yes, the Miata adapter is needed...

3. The boot, you can either put through the slot, or leave on the outside and attach with the 3M tape...it looks WAY better through the slot though...

If you have any other questions let me know...

lol. thanks scratchnsniff, didnt expect such a quick response!

after seeing the "how to" on ebrake boot installs for the P5 on redlinegoods' website, im kind of torn between wrapping the boot around the cover vs feeding it through.

a couple last questions if you guys dont mind :)

1. is the momo adapter only needed if I am purchasing/installing a momo handle, or is it needed regardless of what brand/company I decide to go with? do each brand have their own adapters?

2. Is the adapter used to keep the butt of the handle and the boot together? If I purchased an aftermarket ebrake handle, and wanted to go with a "fancy" redlinegoods brake boot, would the adapter work perfectly?

3. besides momo, are there any other nice options to choose from?

Its from Prosport Gauges. Anyone by chance have any experience with this handle? Would it possible fit a protege5?

It was made for the mazda3 and 5, and after calling Prosport, they told me that it made to fit directly over the existing oem brake handle.

1. I do know that it is needed for sure with the Momo handle, and I would assume only with it since it is used for the cutout in the end where the actual button would be pushed in...like the handle posted above it would not work on...

2. The adaptor is used so that you don't have a pinprick button on the end of the handle from the stock piece and fills the hole on the end of the boot very nicely...a different boot would work...remember though that the Momo boot was made for this knob and the fit IMO is great...real nice quality to it as well...

3. Momo does have different ones...JNaoto has another variation...

that looks like a perforated black leather boot with white piping from redlinegoods. :D

hows the fit with the adapter and handle?

Ok, so I just installed a Momo handle, and getting the stock ebrake cover off without cutting was impossible until I figured out the trick...go to Home Depot or any hardware store and buy a cheap set of gloves with grippy palms...mine have some rubberized compound on them. I had been pulling on the ebrake and making NO PROGRESS, but with these, I had it off in five minutes. It's still a bear, but definitely makes a rough job much easier!
