MOD: Console storage cover?

Has anyone thought of making a cover for the center console storage bin? It seems funny to me that Mazda didn't make one. With a few CDs/pairs of sunglasses in there it looks kinda messy. I like the clean look.

I was thinking that a machined piece of phenolic plastic (already black) with some thin open-cell weather stripping around the edge to keep it from rattling would look nice. Alternatively, a piece of MDF machined and upholestered to match the console. Either way, machine it with a rabbet around the edge to keep it in place.

I will hopefully tackle this in the next few months but appreciate any thoughts or pics of what you have done.

Is the spacing of the seats in the Mazda5 the same as any other Mazdas? Just wondering if there was a diffrent Mazda center console, made for a different model, which would fit.

The 2006 and 2007 models have centre console storage covers. They removed it in 2008 along with two additional cup holders for the 2nd row seats when they opted to put in the rear AC ducts.

which center console? the Center console on the 5 has a cover. under the lid is a shallow tray for things like mp players, etc. under the tray is the storage compartment that can hold CD's etc.

Did Mazda get rid of the cover on later model years? sounds dumb to me.

Sounds like in '08 and onward Mazda removed the cover on the storage compartment between the driver and passenger seats. Yes, the cupholders are gone due to the rear vents however, the underseat flip-out try in the second row has two cup holders as well as a tray with mess bag for storage underneath.

Can someone snap a shot of the lid so I can try and replicate it?

hmm, that center console tray with mesh netting and 2 cupholders has always been there! I have it on my 2006 GT (canada!)

Oh yeah, I'm sure it has. I just meant that there is still a spot for the middle row passengers to place their beverages. Can you take a quick shot of your console lid for me and post it up? Thx.

Thanks for the pics BP. I have a cover for that console storage. Its the small storage "bin" if you will, located between the drivers seat and the passengers seat, or, right behind the e-brake lever that I am wanting to make a cover for. Does that have a stock cover in your 5?

no its quite a bit larger than the small 'bin' that you are talking about...sorry for the confusion!...i thought you wanted to model it off the middle row cover

Yeah I usually wait until just before the winter to get the interior detailed. This summer was particularly busy!

Different configuration than the '08+. I only see 1 cupholder there for the second row. Our's has a square bin at the rear of the console. A wooden lid could be fabricated very easily. Cut to size with 1/4" or so overhang, roundover the edges with a router, paint to match, and install a couple of small hinges. I don't even think it would need a latch.

There are actually 2 cup holders (4 in total) for the second row. behind the cupholder you do see, there is a second one that flips out of the rear of the center console. and of course there are the 2 cup holders in the flip out center tray!

Mazda pretty much screwed up the center console stack arrangement from 08 on! don't know why the changed it the way they did!

If I'm not mistaken, certain Euro markets include the rear vents as well as the console cover. The American market got screwed as always for cost concerns. Check out these pics from the Singapore website. They show 2 different consoles so I'm not really sure how its optioned out but I think the vents are on all models.

It actually makes no difference to me. The only reason the center console cupholders would be nice, is when the 2nd row tray is folded in. I've never seen the point of 12 (exaggeration) cupholders for a 6 passenger vehicle. We've still got 8, so it's ok with me. The chinese version seems to have 1 extra than mine along with the rear vents. The vents are much more important to us.
