Hello and help....

Hey everyone.. hello.. i am here trying to get an idea of what i should do.. I have a 2003 protege 5 bone stock 2.0 .. our son who has it while in college was coming home for the holidays and had some engine problems. he siad that it stopped on him on the freeway . so after i drove down to see if i could fix it and then towing the car home. I have found out the following.. waterpump is no good.. so i suspect he over heated the motor.. he said he didnt notice until it was already too late.. you know teenagers.. i checked the oil.. seems ok.. doesnt look like a blown head gasket on that side not sure if its leaking into a water passage.. i pulled the plugs .. a little dirty but ok looking when i looked down into the cylinders it seems as if i have little pools of liquid in there .. so i stick something in there so i can check what it is .. smells like fuel.. didnt look like water... i need to get a compression tester to check the compression but when i crank it it seems like there is some compression .. i wont be positive until i do a test.. i checked for spark (screw driver against a peice of metal and i have spark. ) i also took off the oil cap and can see the cams rotating.. so i deduce that the belt has not broken.. is it possible that it slipped being hot? or because the water pump went out? if there some kind of safety switch or sensor on the motor that gets tripped once it overheats? when i spoke the to tech at the dealer he sort of mentioned something about that.. so it has me wondering.... i just need to see if i can get the car to start.. changing the water pump isnt a big deal.. i can take care of that but i need t determine if its something else.. please help as i know cars but not this one.. moslty older ones but i can do the work if i no what i need to look for.. pictures would also be very helpful ...

thanks so much in advance.

i guess it must be pretty bad if no one wants to make a comment or suggestion... thanks anyway.. i will work my way through it..

these engines can be a disaster area after an overheat... but you may get lucky... I would try resetting the ECU, crank it and see what happens. at this point, I doubt it can hurt anything. I'm curious to see the results of the compression check, and if you get it running, I'd keep a close eye on the oil and coolant quality/levels for a while.

thanks .. how would i go about resetting the ecu? i download the manual from floptical web site would that info be in there?

ok here it is... compression tested the motor cold .. i have from water pump side away the readings are 25-15-15-32.. not looking good. so far.. i took the valve cover off and checked the timing belt.. still in one piece.. there is a bit of play on it though.. i would expect it as the motor has a few miles on it.. i cranked the motor to check if the belt may have skipped. .. but it looks ok.. I guess the next step is to take the head off.. and have it checked.. any other ideas before i get to that.. i have to wait for the rain to slow down a bit so i have time to go through the manual..

of course any suggestion is welcomed

25-15-25-32 WHAT? please don't say psi....

if it is... you're cooked. unless the timing jumped (I don't know why it would) new engine, or complete rebuild of that one.

so you think it may be more than just a blown head gasket... any way of knowing if the bottom end of the motor is still good with out having to take it out? i know that i may have to replace the whole motor.. but i am just being methodical. just not looking forward to that being what needs to be done college... is expensive, this car is making it more expensive..

well i pulled the head off... after disconnecting all the connections, it pulled apart fairly easily. i have photos of the head and the motor as well as the gasket. i will post them in hopes that someone would look at it and tell me what they think. the block it self looks real good... the cylinders look very good. no scoring or anything. i checked the head for cracks between the cylinders and it looks good.. only thing i can think is that the head is warped and no good.. I work in a machine shop so I should be able to set the head up and check if it is warp... i can also face the head if needed what is the most that i should shave of the head? or would i be better off having a engine machine shop do it? advise is always welcome..........

thanks

here are some pictures.. any comment is welcomed.. in the last picture i cleaned between the cyl some as to check for cracks.. didnt see any.. going to that it apart and set it up on my mill and see if i can check it for flatness.

here are some more pictures of me checking for flatness. i decided not to wait until i get to work I have a Tormach (www.tormach.com) mill in my garage.. its not big enought to shave the head and true it but its good enough to check the flatness.. I set the part on three leveling jacks and got all three points within .001 i swept along the front edge and it was flat with in .004 but when i swept across the cylinders it was in excess of .015 you will see by the photos the gap on the head.. i know that the block is cast iron.. chances of it cracking? you can see from about the photos above that the block looks ok... let me know what you think

not sure if anyone is readingthis but i will update where things are with the motor.. i took the cams out with the intention of sending it to the machine shop to have the head shaved.. while checking for cracks.. i noticed that the valves we not properly seated down on the valve seats.. I guess that the warpage from the head translated into the head needing a valve job.. checking on that next.. looks like a complete rebuid of the head..

low compression with no cylender wall scoring woulda pointed me to the valves... if you're lucky its just the head and your block is fine...

i will let you know how things go once i get the car back together ..currently look for head . would you happen to know the interchange on the head ??

well put the FS2 head in the car after having it worked on a bit .. got the car running and i am surprised at how well it is doing having an overheating issue but going to change the thermostat and see if that fixes that problem.. other than that it idles well.. going to take it to the dealership and have them give it the once over and pray that its just monir adjustments that are needed.. lucky me ...

not really all that helpful but props to you for doing all this as opposed to just taking it to a repair shop and paying insane amounts of money for them to "fix" the problem. i want to ask, are you doing all this work with your son? i would love to work on cars with my pops, and even though its costing you alot of money...at least you could be sharing some experiences with your son, like ripping apart an engine.

anyways, good luck to you, i hope you get it all worked out
