my sri came with instructions to oil the filter. Talked to a guy at work whos a mechanic and he said its not needed. Just wondering what everyone else does. Maybe its just me, but the search option on this forum is a ******* joke.(dunno)

Certain types of filter require oil to work right. If the directions say to oil the filter, I would do it. The alternative is sucking in dust/dirt into the intake, which is not a good thing. If you don't want to oil the filter, find a dry filter replacement. Amsoil makes a good alternative in almost any size.

Not enough info to answer your question, but I'll try to help. What brand SRI do you have? Is the filter made by K&N (regardless of manufacturer of the SRI) or someone else?

Most oiled gauze filters come pre-oiled. I've never heard of one that had to be user oiled before installation. If there is a kit with it for re-oiling, that may be the instructions you are talking about.

K&N oiled gauze filters do not need to be-oiled except every 50,000 miles and last a lifetime. Most people re-oil them way to frequently.

Try here for info:

BTW: Google is an excellent search engine. If you add "mazdas247" to your Google search, it works pretty well to find things our search function may have trouble with.

My K&N Filter on my Jet Ski had to be oiled also FYI.

my bad, i was at work and had to make it quick. Its a cobb sri and it came with instructions on oiling the filter element. But they didnt appear to be cobb specific instructions if that makes sense.

the cobb filter is pre oiled already, thats why its in a plastic bag. Once it turns white/gray its time to reoil. some filters like k&n as msms3 stated dont have to be reoiled for quite some time. but its dependent on how much the car is driven and the environment its driven in. Doesnt matter what oil is used. I use k&n cuz its cheaper and does the same as the cobb stuff. Heres a pic of what the filter will look like when its time to reoil. I do mine every 5-10k since thats when it dries out.
