Yup, that's what I replaced my blank switch with. It's a much better spot for coins than the cubbies or ash tray.

My 04 mz3 had all 4 of those and non were in use at all, had the s model sedan. My sport only has one occupied by the dsc button, same as the cx7. Who knows then...

I would think it could be the switch for the austrailian 3's headlight squirters..... but thats just a guess.
totally bitchin. definately best use of the space.

now that makes sense. Forgot about that, and the only reason I know about it is cuz it was in a YouTube vid
5 minutes. If I recall correctly, you pop off the panel surrounding the switch cluster (it's held in with retention clips). Then reach inside and push the switch cluster foward by pressing the back of it. You'll see the blank switch held in with two clips, so push those in, the blank will pop out, then insert the coin holder, put everything back together again.
When I did it, I removed the hood latch release and a couple of screws, then the left side panel. Then everythink is accessible. I might have done too much work though...

Like I said... I am not sure about it but it seems logical. We need some of those aussies to chime in here and find out for sure.
another thing it could be is an AWD switch of some kind that the use in the AWD Axela in Japan. But thats just another guess. lol

all i hear is bitchin when the girl friend is in my car. Driving me insane...
its kinda funny though because the more she keeps bitchin .. the more pissed i get and i drive faster ... that shuts her up... ..........somtimes .....

remove mazdaspeed sill from the floor
remove kick panel
drop hood release
undo screw
pull
the rest is easy
you can get enough access without removing the sill or the panel just by pulling, but if you want more room, then remove those two items
