How To Change Transmission/Tranny Fluid

i dont mind doing it, i kinda like doing it but if it's cheaper to have it done i'll do that. i'll call around and see. i know some places do oil changes cheaper than it costs me to do it, but then again i use mobil1 synethic so maybe thats more. i guess i'll see what other ppl use. it's a pro 5 in FL so usually warm and humid, anyone change theirs in similar climate?

hawaii is like that, right now i'm using redline mt90 and it seems to be working just fine. i heard people also use pennzoil, gm sychromesh, and redline shockproof (the blue one). i believe our trans requires a 75w90 gear oil.

changing the fluid in an auto, how do u get all of the fluid out? will it all drain from the torque converter, or is there a little hand pump i should use to in a sense syphon it all out

i don't think you can drain the whole thing easily. just do multiple 4 quart changes.

i called pep boys and he said the only thing they can really do is a flush which is like 120...haha yea right! isn't it bad to get a flush? i read that somewhere, i dont know though. guess i get to change it myself. woot. i'll go check for fluid today. i checked the book and it doesn't say what viscosity to use

thats what i got. mobil1 75W-30. that's all they had was mobil 1 or mag1 so i got stuck w/ mobil1. i wanted redline or amsoil but o well....

pepboys had royal purple so i think i am gonna take it back and go get the RP from pepboys

i cant even find the place to pour it in on the auto tranny. Im probably looking in the wrong place

down the dipstick tube

I have a manual transmission. I'm going to replace the fluid myself with GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh (if I can find it around here...ha). I had a few questions. First. I have not done this yet, but I saw on protege5.ugly.net that there are washers under the bolts I need to replace when I do a change?...Is that necessary, and if so, where do I get them? Is it just a generic, universal part? Secondly, I was wondering if I'm looking at the correct the drain and fill plugs. That is why I've included the pictures. haha If so, what size are they? Thanks :)

P.s. I'm on a mission make this car last for over 200,000 miles. That's why I have so many questions. haha (headbang)

those look like the right plugs. usually you change the gaskets on the plugs as a precaution, but most people get away with reusing it.

Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid is a synchromesh transmission fluid designed for certain manual transaxles and manual transmissions used by General Motors or Chrysler. why put it in a mazda?

hm...I have the infamous 2nd-3rd gear grind. I thought I saw more than one person saying the use of it in their Mazdas really helped...What would you recommend?

grind as in really loud grind or grind as in you can barely hear it and once it's in gear it goes away?

It's the going-bad-synchro grind. You hear it grind when it gets into 3rd gear, but goes away.

like while it's in gear or just before it goes into gear. i get a slight grind while i am pushing into gear and then once it goes into gear it's gone. it's not loud though, but it's noticable as long as i have the radio off.

Just before it goes into gear. Mine can be quite loud. I heard it was like a $2500 fix, but fluids such as BG Synchromesh II and GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh could help keep the damage minimal...

Ok well...I don't know what to do anymore. I would love to get rid of that grinding. But after reading through all these previous posts on this forum, it seems that you have a point. Synchromesh is not meant to be used in Mazdas. So I was thinking of MT-90...What if I mixed it 50/50 or so with Lucas oil stabilizer like some people did to the Synchromesh?
