Rear Disc Conversion-JDM 323 vs US spec 323 w/ rear disc

I was reading the protegefaq again and it indicates that the parts to perform a rear disc conversion for a 3rd generation protege can be obtained from a 323 or familia with rear disc. Does it have to be JDM or can the hardware be sourced from a US 323 with rear disc?

I am also considering get the parts from a p5/mp3/es or msp with rear disc and doing some fabrication to keep the car 4 lug.

I called Corksport a while back and was told they could get a kit together but it was going to cost over $1200.

Need direction, I am in Miami and there are several junkjards around here so if I can use the US 323 hardware that would be good. Thank you to in advance to who every responses.

This idea has been floating around for a while now. I'm debating doing this or converting to 5 lug whether it cost effective or not. Neither probably is, but I just want to do it because of the challenge and to see if it CAN be done.

Old news now, but Corksport emailed me back that the 4-lug disc break set-up is $300. Includes knuckles, hubs, and rotors. But you have to source your own calipers and e-brake cables. He didn't mention anything about brake lines. And I agree, it's more for looks than for performance. Probably be better off if you want to decrease you stopping distance and reduce brake fade to do a front big brake kit. But then again, here's another question - anyway to use the MSP setup on a 4 lug car? That's a question for another time!

quite some ppl have done it already...if you want to keep it 4 lug rear disc, i know proteges in china are 4 lug disc

Really!?!?

Do you have any links? Pics? I only know of two 3rd gens that have 4 lug rear discs. 1)Biknman, who has a completely custom race setup. 2)Corksport, which they probably sourced their own parts from Japan since they have all their own connections and suppliers.

Please respond!!!!

Could someone that has converted a 3rd generation protege with rear drums to disc themselves respond to this thread with the following information (1) which car was the source of the hardware, (2) how much did the overall project cost and (3) how difficulty was it to do.

I am really hoping to get a response from an expert like the The Man or Twilightprotege. Does anyone have a link or a website where JDM 323 parts or familia parts can be purchased? Thank you in advance.

I do not..but I am going back in may and will take pics. However, I am for sure they do have rear discs. The wheels of the proteges are the same as the LX/DX wheels and being an protege owner...I took a very close look lol

Actually, a DIY conversion might not be as hard as you think... I'm working on getting it started and will keep you updated.

What it essentially entails is using the spindle off a rear disc 5-lug Protege, but keeping the 4-lug hub. I gotta go down to a pick-n-pull and see what I can find...

are you gonna keep it 4 lug? I think it's just universally better to get the 5 lug...easy to find parts and etc

Yeah, I want to keep it 4-lug. I know parts are easier to come by with the 5, but from a cost perspective, it's probably cheaper to keep it 4 in the long run (aka don't have to buy new wheels, etc). Plus, once you have the hardware in place, you can add any big-brake kit to the 4 lugger by just swapping out the 5-hole rotor with a 4-hole one.

Again, I need to do a little more hands on research, but on paper and by the way it looks in the service manual, it should be easier than expected. I'm just trying to think outside the box on this one.

it's SO EASY its stupid
i thought about this for years till i came across some
cool info

i have the specs from a guy in canada who did it

a) 5 lug uprights
b) custom machined spindle
c) 4 lug hubs

hardest part is rotors
i guess 4 lug disc/rotors are hard to get

i almost forgot...
there is also;
a spacer
(that goes between the disc and the hub
to align the caliper)

so yeah easy
as far as WHY?
why not?
it looks cooler then drums at the very, very least :)

So it does work... I had the exact same idea as you (see my previous post) but haven't tried it yet. What exactly do you mean by "Custom Machined Spindle"? Did you take a 5-lug spindle and modify it somehow?

Thanks,

My question exactly

I have the same question. I would appreciate if anyone could answer this question for us. I am now planning to get the whole rear assembly for a P5 at the junkyard, buy some stainless steel lines for a P5 and get Precision Brakes to build me some 4 lug 11 or 12 inches rotors (cross drilled and slotted). I just need to find out about the custom shaft.

Yeah, I'm gonna go to a pick and pull as well to do it myself. I'm gonna start off by just buying one from a P5 and one from a 4-lug drum to do some test fitting and such. It would be nice to see what is so custom about the shaft...
