relocated radiator project.

I took off my stock bumper cover because i'm putting on a [cracked] RB bumper I got for free. I know some of that supporting stuff isn't needed with a fiberglass bumper. But is that big ugly plastic thing that bolts to the front bumper the 5mph bumper thing? I'm thinking about taking that off too before i attack the core support with a sawz-all (naughty)

It's a track car, so I'm not gonna need all that extra 'junk' mazda puts on...

no, the black thing behind the bumper cover. The black thing on the bottom help direct air through the radiator. min's long been off, but I will fab a new better one once the 'new' bumper cover is on.

If its a track car I'd go nuts with the saw....

I take it your talking about the black core support? IIRC it has some styrofoam of some sort around it. We replaced mine with a steel beam...lol. Kinda a joke around the shop regarding my luck with telephone poles. If you cant tell Im not anal about weight on the car. (thumb)

yeah, i think it's just part of the 5mph support. The styrofoam is taped with masking tape to the top of the black part. BTW, masking tape is worthless after 210k miles and 15 years :p

I know the strofoam is there to support the plastic bumper cover at speed so it doesn't concave..

Indeed, it is part of the 5MPH crash rating. I'd advise against bump drafting without it ;). Though, I don't see that happening with a FG bumper anyway.

took off the big black piece, and the big brackets that hold it in place. taped off the area i'm going to start cutting away at. took off the P/S cooler while I was there and the OEM radiator ducting. man, there is a bunch of room under there now.

Plan is to lower the radiator, and tilt it forward to about 30degrees. then mount an intercooler on top of it, and have it's own seperate air flow then all of it vent thru the hood :)

Hmmmmm...[wheels turning]. I might look into this for the Challenge Miater as I will be using a pretty large IC on Ver 2.0.

Fadi, once both of our cars are finished, we need to line up so that everyone can finally know that Miater>Miada.

bring it on!

seriously, there is a lot of room underthere. Are you using the stock bumper cover thou? I've heard if you take off the guts of the bumper support, the cover will concave at speed.

heh.. with this bumper on, I'll now have 5 different colors on the car. not counting the different shades of red.

red car
silver head light cover
grey bumper
BRG pax side mirror
primer black hardtop

lol

Come on, Fadi. You know better than that. PICS!

Some pics for Kevin. :)

Old bumper, along with all the extra metal Mazda puts..
Quarter view to show bottom of custom made bracket for radiator, and to show the angle/placement the radiator will be in. Not the final location, but pretty close. gonna have to tweak once I get the intercooler...

That last picture almost looks as if the radiator is lying flat....
How much weight for all the items you took off.

Vash-

Put. The. Sawz-all. Down. :D

Very interesting. Keep the pics coming as you progress.

Vash,
not sure of the weight, but it will be 10# difference at the most. the fiberglass bumper is heavier than the OEM plastic..

Kevin,
I can't.. it's too much fun :D And it's cordless/battery powered. So I can take it anywhere (evil)

Next update will be the weekend of the 18th. Family obligations will keep me out of the garage this week (shrug)

Someone remind me to never include Fadi in my crew team (if I ever have the chance to need one). lol
