MP3/Racing Beat exhaust review for P5
So I got a rear section Racing Beat exhaust (oval tip) from an MP3 to put on my P5.
The exhaust, like others know, must have the tip shortened about 4-5 inches since the MP3 is a sedan. Mine was already modified (thanks to "Mad Hatter")
I rolled the rear of the P5 onto ramps and had plenty of room to work. I soaked the exhaust bolts with "PB Blaster" penetrating spray the night before and again before i started working. I scrape as much rust build up off the flange and nuts as possible. I then tapped a 6 sided 14mm socket onto the nut. (don't use a 12 point wrench or socket as these bolts will strip)
I slipped a 12" length of pipe onto the end of my ratchet and with a few grunts both bolts eased off. If they won't move you could try a small propant torch to heat up the bolt. Or as a last resort you could cut off the stock bolt with a sawzall (the Racing Beat rear section should have the two bolts attached to it)
The stocker slipped out of the hangers easily and the racing beat went in easily and lined up perfectly of course.
I had an exhaust flange gasket laying around so I used it, you could reuse the stock one if it's ok or go buy a new one if you want to be sure there are no leaks.
I got a tube of some high temp silicone RTV (in the red or copper tube). I put a good bead of this on both sides of the gasket.
I used high temp Copper Anti Seize liberally on the exhaust bolts. Hopefully this will make it easier if I have to go back to stock. I tightened everything up and let it sit overnight.
No leaks, slight sound increase and it looks nice. A classy look, very subtle.
The sound is only slightly louder than stock. It was hard to tell a difference at idle and parked revving. I have stock intake and headers/cats. At speed I can tell there is a little more sound behind me. Usually the P5 has a little sound coming from the engine and intake when driving. Now the sound could be described as even front to back. At 3500 rpm cruising it is in it's more resonant range. To the average joe they wouldn't be able to tell from inside the car. This is good as I wanted just a little more noise with zero resonant booming or attention. (I've already gone down that road in the past, got it out of my system)
This is a very mellow change in sound. I can see if some kids might want a loud aggressive exhast, this won't do it unless you delete resonators, cats or change headers etc.
I'm pleased with the results.(thumb)
