Removing Intake Manifold

Man, what a damn chore its been, 3 hours to remove the Intake mani, label the 20-something connections to it... all to get a god damn EGR pipe off, that sucker was rusted, carbonized, alien fusion beam must have hit it a few times too. Got it off finally, going back to stock due to the knock\ping, metallic clicking sound I have on acceleration and around 3k rpms its real annoying. I think someone had the same problem and it was a bearing that crapped out.... some other people have had the ticking from not having the EGR hooked up, so hopefully when everything goes stock, cept exhaust and shifter, either the problem will go away or if I go back to the dealer, I dont get alot of flack about aftermarket parts... I woulda been lost without the different threads about all of this. (thumb) Ive been standing on my tippy toes for 3 hours straight basically, my legs are killing me. BEER THIRTY.

I pulled just the upper half in like half an hour. removed the VTCS and dropped it back in.

wow, so im finally done, damn. I put my stock header back on, actually hooked up my egr FINALLY, still have the clicking sound, I was hoping it would magically dissapear. I guess this weekend I do need to go to the dealershit, I am not too happy about it either. HOWEVER, I am a true believer in the OBX being a decent HP gain, my car doesnt have the pull to it anymore, and its a LOT quieter. Maybe after I get everything settled with the knocking sound, I will get my EGR nipple on the header moved so that it will actually line up and fit this time.

Question for Mike R...Did you leave fuel rail & injectors in place to get this done in 1/2 hr? Can you give a few more details? Want to remove VTCS but have been procrastinating. Would like to do the half shell method instead of taking off the whole thing.

yes, the obx does make a marked difference

let me know what the deal find about the clicking sound, looks like an on going problem for some of us that hasnt yet gotten pin pointed...

Yeah, all the searches I have done on it, two people have had engines replaced, but didnt say as to what, one person had a bearing causing it. For some reason I have a strange feeling they magically will not hear it, or it will be a "normal" sound. I dont see how it can be normal, it sounds horrible when Im driving next to something to reflect the sound. I put all my stock stuff back on, cept for short shifter and exhaust, thinking maybe that would stop it, it does seem quieter now. Also I was wondering what type of oil the people who have the clicking sound are using, mobile1 synthetic for me 5-30, with royal purple gear oil forgot the viscos. on it though.... Im wondering if maybe a thicker oil would help...

What's the half shell method?

Just taking off the intake manifold, and leaving the resonator chamber on (which has the throttle body and EGR pipe attached to it).

I can get pics later if you want to see :)

sub'ing for pics of the Intake manifold...because I have a 626 mani outside waiting for me(glare)

The fuel rail has to come off, I unbolted everything and just put it over to one side. Still had to loosen the supprt bracket on the lower part of the intake manifold to get enough play to get the upper half off the head studs. I also already had a spare ready to install too.

Okay, here are the pictures (attached).

The bottom part is the resonance chamber, where the EGR pipe (pictured) and throttle body attach to.

In the other picture, you can see the VTCS actuators and the holes I filled where the VTCS rod was. I used Quikweld, but am going to have it welded because I don't want that stuff falling into my engine!

I have more pictures if anyone wants :)

What's the best thing to use to fill holes that won't deteriorate & come out besides welding?..............
