Ok,

Right off the bat I know I am going to get a lot of the Auto X'ers pissed at me for even asking this, but hear me out.

This fall I'm going to be getting a new set of wheels. (Hopefully, Work Meister S1's from Auto RnD.) Since I will be moving back to 17's from my current 18's I'll of course be needing new tires. So, I've been checking out all of the options for what I can stretch across an 8" wheel.

There are a lot of tires out there that will do the job, but the one I keep coming back to and drolling over is the Advan A048.

Now, yes I am aware this is a competition tire that happens to be DOT approved. I also know that I won't expect much in the way of tread life out of it either. However, one must understand that my car is rarely driven. I walk to work and I also always have one of two other cars at my access for daily driving. I've owned my car for almost 15 months and it has only a little over 8K miles on it. Over 2K of those put on in one trip from VA to IL and back.

So, my thinking is I would like to have one of the grippiest (probably not a word) tires around for the times when I do drive my car. If it also happens to be one of the best looking tires, IMO, on the market, all the better.

I live in Hawaii now, so obviously inclement snowy and icey weather is not a problem. That leaves my major concern being wet weather traction. I have Googled for reviews and specs on this tire for the last hour and I have still not found any answer to my question.

Has anyone either directly or even vicariously had any experience with this tire since it became available in NA? I'm not planning to go testing the tires limits in wet weather, first of all I don't tend to drive the Speed in the rain, second when I do get caught in the rain I drive very conservatively.

Ok, you now know my bio. Question is are these tires truly road worthy enough that if I was out cruising and it started to pour I would still be able to drive along with the flow of traffic without having to worry about becoming another statistic? Of course also feel free to add any other thoughts you might have on these tires too.

Thanks,

Lang

From just looking at the tread, I wouldn't feel safe driving in inclement weather. Of course, it's an uninformed opinion. :p

what's your future plans for using the speed? obviously, you don't want to get a tire that's overkill for your intentions. not to mention overkill can put a little bit more stress on your stock components.

have you tried searching any of these?? (this is of course assuming they make the size you're looking for)

BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD, Kumho MX, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

there's tons more out there but it'll depend on the budget and what use the tire will see.

Future intentions are hard to say. I've thought seriously about Auto X'ing on Sundays, but that would be down the road and I probably wouldn't end up using my road wheels anyhow.

In terms of other tires I've looked at most all of the ones you've listed and more. I was originally thinking of going with Toyo T1S or BFG g-Force T/A KDW 2's. Plus there are the Yoko Parada Spec 2's I have now and love. Many choices out there.

One thing that will end up limiting me is going with the 17x8" wheel I am plnning on. No one seems to make a 225/40/17 and a 225/35/17 is way too small. So, that only leaves me with the 225/45/17 which is going to equal the same total diameter that I currently run with my 18's. So, no real advantage there.

Any thoughts on running a 215 on an 8" wheel? It'll be about as narrow as possible and streched across the rim to the max. I actually kind of like that look, but so much for any rim protection.

I would get some azenis if you liked the parada you will fall in love with the falken azenis. if you are set on a competition tire then get the p-zero corsa

Well when I was there the highest speed I saw was 55mph on the freeway. At 55 I would say that those are fine. Here in CA where the speed gets up to 80mph during rain heck no. As for the meisters, I would get 16's.

Good info. guys. It's sounding like the Advan won't be my best choice. Speeds around here can get kind of loopy in the rain and it rains here a lot (as I'm melicha remembers). So, no competition based tire for me. Well, not for the street anyhow.

BTW, why do you recomend 16" on the Works?

16's would be light as hell, that's the only reason. 17's did look good on Rishie's car though. If you don't go for the Advans go for the Azeni's(will be fine in the rain) or gor with some Bridgestone RE070's
