    need help

You could try Bosch Platinum and a K&N filter. Usually get mine at Wal-Mart. Rock Auto may have them too.

    Proper 2000 1.6 Water Pump?

If this is the car I am thinking of, is there a hard metal line that you have to remove to get to the pump? If so, I think the o-ring attaches to the line that goes into the pump, not on the pump itself. If I remember correctly, the line starts on the driver's side of the engine, comes around...

    Alternator connector removal?

Yup. That's a pain in the wazoo that clip thing...

Rattling noise when i drive ?

Try going around the whole interior with a screwdriver. Tighten (but not over-tighten) every screw you can see under the dash, in the dash, in the console, etc.

    spark plug blowout

Yes, thrice. Once on my wife's 2000 Protege and twice -- twice -- on my '96 Miata. Someone didn't replace the plugs correctly, i.e. stripped the threads or cross-threaded them, etc. The sad part is on the second blowout on my Miata, the plug damaged my nice aluminum hood. On the Protege, I...

find timing marks on 99 protege 1.6l engine

Contact dtatham over at Club Protege. I just did my head gasket (same engine) and he helped me immensely. If you need anything else, give me a holler. Cheers

    screeching on cold start.

It could be the alternator itself. My wife's alternator slowly seized up. Screeched like a fisher cat until the thing kicked it and the belt finally melted/burned/snapped off. When I pulled the alternator, I couldn't even turn the pulley. It was frozen solid, peppered with the remnants of a new...

    parts needed for timingbelt/waterpump?

I think the water pump comes with its own seals. I guess you don't have to, but I would replace the tensioner and idler as well, just to be safe. Oh, for forgot eggnog too. Good luck!

Rough idle after head gasket/trans replacement

Hi, Need some advice here. I have a 2000 1.6L ULEV Protege DX Auto with 170,000. I just replaced the head gasket myself (had the head machined), including the timing belt, water pump, random seals and gaskets, spark plugs, oil and filter and the like. A week after, the transmission blew (for...

    just got a protege

Yup, but never had any mods. It was a stock '91 Golf Wolfsburg, red, with teardrops. I loved that frickin' car. Just left me on the side of the road too many times and my minimal experience at the time couldn't keep up with its demands.

    just got a protege

Strip it. Back seat, door panels, headliner, spare tire, AC, power steering, console, cupholders, glass (replace with Plexi), chip it, cold-air intake, take the carpet out, etc. I've gotten rid of a couple of hundred pounds in an old E30 this way. Works great!

    Timing plate?

Yeah, I didn't know it was separate either. It looked pretty solid to me. Then a dude on another Mazda forum sent me a PDF of a section of the actual shop manual. It had an exploded view of all the parts on there, kind of like plastic car model instructions. It really was quite helpful to see...

    Timing plate?

It is actually a separate piece, which requires seven gallons of PB Blaster, five years and a couple of East Germans to take off. I discovered it's a $10 part from the dealer, only after I spent $80 on a used pulley from a junkyard (which didn't even have the correct plate either...oh well)...

EGR Valve where did it go?

It's on the intake manifold, to the right, really close to the firewall. It's a little bit under it if I remember correctly. There is a metal tube that runs sort of between the intake manifold and the firewall. Follow that to the right and you'll run right into it. It is possible to take it...

Got pics of your 1.6L without valve cover?

I'm looking for a shot of someone's 1.6L without the valve cover on it. I recently replaced the head gasket on my 00 Protege, but when I put the valve cover back on the head, I don't think I lined up that little half circle plug thingy that sort of cradles the front cam on the right hand side of...
