DIY Mazda Firmware Update Information

Not a stupid question! Yes, these instructions are just for the firmware update. If you want the OEM Android Auto or Apple CarPlay from Mazda, you need to do this firmware update, and also install a "retrofit kit" that includes an updated USB hub and wiring. The kit itself can be purchased online. The dealer charges that much because they supply the parts and also charge labour at their shop rate to perform the firmware update and install the kit.
Much obliged. I get why it's so expensive at the dealer, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just a firmware update they were charging $800 dollars for.

FYI if you're around the 613/416 Scarboro mazda has it for sale for $650 dollars, installed!

Props to Candurin for replying to my DM.
I have a 2021 CX5 with what appears to be Mazda Connect 2. Is the upgrade process the same as for Mazda Connect 1 models??
Thanks in advance

Hello @Candurin, send you a DM for the latest firmware for an American Mazda 3 with 59.00.441 NA N installed.

Thank you!

My apologies if this is covered elsewhere in this thread but I'm having trouble finding the answer when I search.

Is it OK to use a USB 3.0 drive or must it be 2.0?

I was able to update my 2021 CX5 to 11048 by
With engine on (not needed)
Insert usb fat32 format
Press and hold mute/power, music and favorite buttons
Running diagnostics for cmu
Then Running cmu update
Process took less than 30 minutes.

So all I will need to do when I get the download link is to transfer it to a FAT32 formatted USB then follow your steps? I saw a youtube video linked in this thread mentioning having to download a program or something.. and a lot of the versions I see people post have "." dots in them. Mine version is like yours just numbers (11062 CX5 2021 USA)

Their labour costs went up by alot. I remember it was $450 only a few years ago too.
I think Mazda of Toronto's pricing is about the same. I think that's their "f off" price :P

Good luck on the upgrade!

Thanks to Candurin for sending me the 11048 firmware. I have both a CX-5 and CX-9 (June 2022 builds) that use this and have 11040 installed. The CX-5 was having some issues, which I resolved before I got around to installing the firmware. My wife complained that the screen was black and Carplay was not working. I had pulled the battery cable to resolve the former but it could have been caused by pressing the vol button for 2 seconds! (I had forgotten about that.) The Carplay issue was because the latest Iphone had been set to "never connect to Carplay" somehow.

There is always a small risk in doing a firmware upgrade. Without any apparent issues do people think I should do it? What is the key benefit in going from 11040 to 11048. And has there actually been 8 updates since June 2022?

I installed the Mazda app upon purchase of both cars. So that should have enabled auto updates of the software? The internet connectivity is pay to play otherwise. The app stopped working within a year and I never bothered to reconnect. I think it was free for the first 3 years, which has passed. I liked the idea of remote start, but if you open the door it shuts off, so to avoid a second cold start you have to do it way in advance.

There was only one update between 11040 and 11048 (it was 11046). Here is the change log so you can see what was addressed in each update:

In general, if your system is working to your satisfaction, you can leave it alone. Having said that, little to no risk in updating yourself.

These are CAD prices? I did the upgrades myself on my Australia purchased CX-9 and CX-5 in 2018 and early 2019. The CX-9 was quite easy but the CX-5 had more dash disassembly. Its been a while. I think the kit had clear instructions. The hardware cost about USD 200, I think. I bought one kit in the US and the first in AU. Same price roughly.
