Official 2026 Mazda CX-5 Pics and Details Released

I mean it's still a CX-5, not a new model. When the Gen 2's came out their big thing over Gen 1 was the sound dampening and better interior materials, and an updated exterior design / grill.
And that is my point, Gen 2 was also a refresh, still using the original chassis and reskinning it. Gen 3 is doing the same thing, just stretching the wheelbase a bit for more legroom. Don't get me wrong, it's an upgrade in some respects (and a downgrade in others), but they could have done more for their best selling car IMHO.

That’s likely because they are connected services. (like getting traffic data through cell network and using the internet for voice recognition).

The question will be how much you can use the service without subscribing. Like will the nav be available but without traffic, etc.

Honestly i never use the mazda nav and voice recognition in my CX-9, because it does not have live traffic. I am always plugged in with apple carplay or android auto. Even in my BMW which has live traffic, i am always on apple CarPlay anyway.
Regarding live traffic, I am not sure what do you mean exactly by live traffic data but in my CX-9, using build-in Nav, I can see on the map the congestion traffic patterns. Using the commander knob it is easier for me to quickly zoom in or check the traffic a head of me. I do use google maps as well and traffic wise they do provide some other useful information and alternative routes but without touch screen it is harder and slower to adjust the map position.

Mazda dropped the performance power train they offered previously. The chassis is a stretched version of the original chassis from the first gen CX-5. So, literally, they have refreshed the same car twice for Gen 2 and Gen 3. There has not been an entirely clean sheet redesign of the car since its inception. Still using the same 6-sp auto and 2.5l engine (until the hybrid arrives) from the 1st gen version. I wouldn't really say it's a larger difference. The 2nd gen added the 2.5T motor in 19 so it also had power train upgrades.
Mazda has said that the hybrid coming next year will have at least the same performance as the 2.5T, so that is coming. Based on recent patents, it looks like the 2.5l hybrid will come with a new 8sp transmission, not the same as the one in the CX-60/90.

I am not sure what you mean about clean sheet redesign as most car manufacturers try to stick with a certain design language and we are talking about a CUV which necessitates a box shape. I also don’t get why you think they just stretched the existing platform, as there would have been a significant redesign needed to support the new full hybrid and what looks like a new transmission that is in line with the new electric motor.

It remains to be seen what the hybrid brings to the table. By clean sheet I mean not a reskin of the same chassis. This is the same basic chassis they have been using since 2013.

Like a full redesign with a new chassis or swapping to the CX-60 body (which would be a new chassis).
Hmmm, well I'm glad they didn't go with the CX-60/70/90 body, which is is/are a fugly mess IMO. As for the chassis, it's a perfectly fine handling car. Why change a good thing?

The design aesthetic of the CX-60 would be better than what we got. I don't at all understand Mazda's 's different directions they're taking. They used to strive for a unified design.

They advertise the brand as an alternative to Audi, and it had the potential to be that. I don't think I see that with this design.

I do like the CX-60 esthetics the best but I actually find an overall 60 - 90 design very inefficient. I know that some limitations come from the engine/transmission/electric motor combo but for such a big cars the interior space is quite limited. The 2nd row leg room is pathetic and interior storage is laughable. The new CX-5 design is welcome in this regard but I really hate the whole concept of a single touch screen with no physical control and more subscription options on features that should be just standard.

Gen 1 version is best version. Change my mind. 😂

I've driven a few Gen 2's (with the 2.5L NA) and compared to my 2014 which is just the 2.5L NA as well, they felt really sluggish to get up and go from a stop. I kinda hated it. Sport mode made it better but the difference was shockingly noticeable.

Was glad to get my Gen 1 back.

Gen 2 was just heavier and obviously slower with the same engine. But turbo made it a really fun car to drive.
Design wise I'd take Gen 1 any time.

Don't worry. It was the same when 2022 refresh happened. People didnt like the lights and other aspects. After a while life goes on and people continue to buy the new model.

In few years the gen2 will look like dinosaur and people will love their new CX5s.
The interior is much cleaner and inline with 2025- expectations....and physical buttons are thing of the past whether we like it or not..

The only thing that would be missed is the Turbo :(

I like knobs and buttons :)

This isn't rocket science. With a 4" wheelbase stretch, how could it not be? This is a change that's long overdue. Should have been part of the Gen 2 redo.
My point is, without having actually been in the car, we don't know what it is like. Specs are one thing, real world experience is another. Hopefully they finally reworked the seats and didn't just reuse them for the 26.

"The past". As defined by who?

Literally nobody I have ever talked to says "you know what I wish I had in my car? A giant iPad!"

As far as I can tell, the actual consumer doesn't want that. The whole thing runs contrary to why Mazda designed the Commander Knob to begin with.

Gen 4, now with a touchscreen shifter and no steering wheel. What? That'll be "modern" for 2035. 😉
