How insane is a 140mph+ speedometer?

The speed cutoff on my stock manual 5 speed 4 cylinder Mazda 6 2004 was at 125mph. The CX-5 would probably be able to reach around the same speeds. It just won’t get there very fast. But I suspect the max speed on the speedos is selected more in terms of design and visual than actual speed expectations.

Remember the CX-5 is also sold in germany where autobahn don’t have speed limits. I don’t think a 140m’h speedo is crazy, but yes the car won’t make all the way there. Even if it could you would probably hit a speed limiter before that.

I would have been ok if my speedo stops at 90. 60-80 right at the top, and nothing after 90. Give me engine temp or oil pressure in that space. 🤷

The fastest I've been with my previous 2020 CX-5 was 105 mph. Briefly because I remembered that my last ticket was back in 2012.
I've done 110 in mine, but that was maybe 11-12 years ago now. And yeah same thing. I haven't had a ticket since 2010 or 2011.

I know there are some speedometers where the inaccuracy of the speed it indicates increases as the speed of the car goes up. My guess is a speedometer that has a pretty high upper speed measurement is done so the main part of where most people drive falls within acceptable accuracy tolerances.
That is a good point. Measuring devices of all types tend to be more accurate towards the center of their range.
