VIN digit #8 indicates if engine has CD w /letter(M) or not w/ letter (L)

I read on this forum that someone posted the eight VIN position indicates weather or not the engine has cylinder activation. I look at a window sticker of a new CX-5 that has the letter”L” meaning for engine NOT having cylinder activation, yet on the same windowsticker it states ” Skyactive G 2.5 engine”. ? Doesn’t Skyactive “G” mean the engine DOES have cylinder activation. I’m confused

No it does not mean that it has CD. "G" is simply the version of Skyactiv. The next gen coming is Skyactiv Z.

Thank you very much. That’s a relief. Now if I may ask, does the “L” and “M” digit apply to 2025,2026, and maybe 2027 yr models ? Thanks for your time and educating me.

SkyActiv(*) ...
D is diesel
G is gasoline
R is rotary
X is the HCCI with SPCCI (kinda like a diesel but using gasoline)

Idunno anything about a Z engine 🤷‍♂️

Yes. It applies to the 2025 as I've said in my other replies. The Select and base trims have the L engines with CD and iStop and the reason why I bought my car as a Select and not the Preferred trim I was considering.

Who knows what's going on for the 2026 let alone 2027 model years. The 2026 isn't out yet.

I may have the actual letter wrong but its the name label of their upcoming own hybrid motor.

I can say with certainty that Mazda's new 2.5L hybrid motor will not be called Skyactiv-H!
