Mazda teasing all new 2026 CX-5!

Maybe because nowadays you can make an hybrid with the same or better torque/horsepower and a lot higher fuel efficiency than the turbo. That is pretty much where the entire industry is shifting, and also where the demand is. Regular engine variants are sitting on dealer lots while there is a long wait list for hybrid variant of the same car. The CX-70/90 has an hybrid with similar power and torque than the high output inline 6 variant.

Hopefully they keep the turbo around, but from a market perspective I could see them replacing it with a high output hybrid

Looks like the turbo is officially being replaced by the hybrid variant, but it is apparently only coming in 2027.

I like that it's a bit bigger, but it will also be heavier. It's gonna need more power than it has. And I hoped it would have an 8 speed transmission, hopefully they retuned the 6 sp to be a little more snayyy

Very disappointed to see that massive screen, which looks to have too many functions integrated including HVAC. I thought Mazda was more concerned about usability/ergonomics than most other brands. On the other hand, Subaru appears to be moving in the opposite (correct) direction, at least with the new Outback which has HVAC controls separate from the screen.

Clearly, Mazda has gotten to the point where it's very hard (not impossible though) to improve on the existing formula.

To me, this makes it blend in more with the RAV4s and CR-Vs on the road. That's not a great thing, but I'll keep an open mind.

I guess in the end, all CUV/SUVs were derived from the wagon (a vehicle with a usually near vertically positioned hatchback door).

My first ever vehicle was a wagon.
I've noticed that my title for the CX-5 lists it as a 5-door wagon. They like to keep things simple, I guess, so maybe they don't have a classification for it.

Mazda commented on why they dropped the turbo.

"The hybrid system will have performance that is comparable to or exceeding the turbo powertrain."

If they used the PHEV drivetrain from the CX-90, they would massively exceed the 2.5T motor. I don't understand why they wouldn't offer this at launch. It is going to use the current 187hp motor and 6-sp as the sole powertrain at the start? Huge mistake IMHO. Where is the new Z motor and 8-sp transmission (economy will be no better than the outgoing car)? At least it seems they have increased the interior size both in the back seat and cargo area. From the pics it appears to be a revision not unlike the 22 model. Is this a new car from the ground up? It looks like another reskin as was done in 2017 (very little difference- I bet most people on the street wouldn't even know this was a new generation). I too, am not a fan of the massive touchscreen with no buttons (except for the defroster- WTF). I see they have a center console like the CX-90 which flips open at the center to the sides. Never been a fan of that style. Also, strange to me, they still have a logo in front, but now it uses MAZDA script on the steering wheel and rear (I had a 1988 323GT which was pre logo and that was what they did so this seems like a regression to me). The good is they kept a real shifter and a panoramic S/R is finally offered. I also like the appearance of the interior overall. I like the tan seats with black backs and the two-tone door panels.

I think they should have just brought the CX-60 over as the new CX-5. Then they could have offered a RWD car with an I-6T option and the hybrid PHEV as well. The size difference is minimal between the CX-60 and new CX-5.

Z motor (hybrid) is coming out in 2027. Yes, refresh. Why completely change a great thing? Definitely more leg room in the back seat area and said to have more over all cargo volume.

Why? Because that motor has been around since the original CX-5 was released. This is the exact same motor/transmission as the 2017 model so we are now looking at an "all new" 2026 car with a 2017 drivetrain. I can't see this as a good thing no matter how one spins it.

Its not all new. Its a refresh. It sits on the same frame. Don't fix it if it ain't broken, applies well here.

This review just has to be here:
Words out of a single mouth. It has the same powertrain as the current Gen and I believe that it sits on the same frame. It's a Next Gen (refresh). "All new" is what everyone wants to hear. It's a sale pitch. Genuinely all new is too drastic, though. Half of me wonders why Mazda even did a refresh on their best selling vehicle which continues to sell well for them, and rightfully so. The think the absolutely biggest key here in this refresh is "bigger". Bigger interior, longer wheelbase. Mazda claims class leading backseat space. I'll believe that when I see it but whatever it is, it's very welcome to me because "bigger is better" in this obsessed world we live in. I am disappointed in the all touch screen controls and the split center console cover. Yuck.

They indeed position it as all new :) The all-new CX5, meticulously designed to be very similar to the current model, I can only imagine how much effort it takes...

It most certainly isn't all new. They are saying it still uses the original chassis of the 2012 gen 1 car, but stretched in wheelbase to give more legroom and cargo. So, no, it isn't all new. Nissan said the Frontier was all new in 22, but it was a reskin just like the 2017 CX-5. Nissan had even used the new powertrain in the 20/21 models before the new truck came out. This is where I think Mazda screwed up royally. If they were going to release it with the original powertrain which has been out since 2014, they could have at least kept the turbo model around till 27 when the hybrid is released (better yet, don't release the Gen 3 until all the engines are ready). I think what Mazda should have done was bring the CX-60 over and renamed it the CX-5 here. Then they would have had a really unique offering in the segment, with 2.5l PHEV and 3.3l turbo I6 options.

Interesting point...There was some speculation before that this might happen...One thing that has proven to be true is that what Mazda ends up doing is often unexpected.

Seems Mazda is set on expanding their suv/crossover type model lineup, not reducing it so continuing the CX-5 in this way may fit that plan for now...

Ghost touch. Haven’t seen it posted yet. I can only imagine someone’s frustration with a problem like this on a touchscreen enabled while driving.

I think many of the CX-5 competitors have increased in size over the years... Rav4, CR-V, etc.
