2021 CX-5 Rear Hatch Lock Issue

Have a 2021 CX5 GX. I have the door lock system setup so that when I use the unlock button on the fob, all doors (including the rear hatch), unlock. On cool temperature mornings the lock on the rear hatch sometimes will not unlock (all other doors unlock). The problem is intermittent. All the passenger doors always work but the rear hatch lock sometimes won't unlock. I hit unlock several times on the fob and it sometimes unlocks. If it doesn't, I use the unlock button on the driver's door. Sometimes that works. There are times it just refuses to unlock and I'll drive the car and then it usually works. When it refuses to unlock, I don't hear a mechanical noise at the hatch lock. Am I correct to assume that the rear body module sends a signal to each lock (separately) to actuate the lock mechanism? Is that lock a mechanical item, ie: plunger or switch which moves to unlock/lock? In my opinion it is the lock/latch assembly that is at fault. I've had the car back to the dealer twice now. They have "reset" the lock settings in the setup, and scanned for codes (there were none). I will be taking it back to the dealer next week. The service manger seems to think that a microswitch in one of the other doors is affecting the system causing the hatch lock to fail. Are there microswitches in the doors? I don't buy that story. I think the lock/latch assembly should be replaced. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would check the battery voltage to see if it is low. Have you replaced it since new? It has been 3-4 yrs...
If OK (says, 12.6v or at least 12.4v), then, likely as you said, the actuator could be at fault or borderline of failing.

Agree w/above, my vote is the actuator failing too. It could be just in need of lubrication, but more likely the former. It happens.

Is there somewhere I can look at a wiring diagram to confirm what is in the system?
I also heard there maybe a recall/service bullentin regarding the the hatch latch.

These are for 2018, but should be the same for you:

When you press the open button in on the dash or outback above the license plate first you will hear a beep. That is the start of the opening sequence. Following that is the snap of the latch release and of course the lift motors start. This entire problem could be a misadjusted (too tight at the latch pawl) tailgate or one of the pinch prevention strips on either side of the tailgate is triggered. Surely any mechanic at a dealership would check these things first. And they should definitely know the opening sequence including the part where your rear taillights flash. Yes, the rear body module handles this task and yes I agree that the latch itself is at fault. I am surprised the dealer didn't remove the lower inside tailgate cover and observe the latches operation from inside the vehicle. Maybe time for a visit to a different dealer.

If it is a GX like the OP stated (Canadian base model), it likely does not have a power liftgate. My '20 CX-5 GX did not have it.

Must have missed that. Sorry. But regardless, the hatch catch is not releasing so I maintain that it's the issue.

Took the car to the dealer. Of course they couldn't get it to fault. No faults code found. Mazda Canada told them to change both of the front door latches. Tested servicable. So far no failure but the weather has been pretty warm and this would only fail on the first try on a cooler morning. Fingers crossed.
