Am I the only one happy with the OEM Toyo A36 Tires?

another Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 user here. I had no problem with A36 to be honest. Hydroplaned once on wet snow, but don't believe it was tires to blame. Switched anyway, Pirelli seemed to be more loud and flaky at first but I either got used or it was kind of a brake-in, now they seem silent.

My other 2018 CX-5, I ran the A36 till it was time for a replacement. The A36 was a smooth ride. Traction was average. Once I purchased the 2024 CX-5, I wasted no time and purchased the Pirelli's. First thing I noticed, there was a bit more road noise. Aside from that, it's a great tire in cornering and wet traction. I always switch over to snow tires in the winter. This time I'll see how the Pirellis perform on snow. "Yes, I know all season tires can only do so much".
 
Wife has a 2019 Signature with Michelin CC2. A few months ago, I bought a 24 Signature for my daughter. I drive, shall we say, in a spirited manner. While the stock Toyos grip ok from a standstill, the issue I have with them is in the turns. Where the CC2s stay planted, the Toyos flex quite easily. Scared me on a turn once when I had first bought the 24 as I was expecting it to handle like my wife's car. I dislike driving on the stock Toyos very much. My daughter is fine with them as she doesn't take turns like I do. But on my cars (I have 2, 1 sedan and 1 wagon) I run Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. So most people don't take turns like I like to. If it were my car, I would have replaced the tires but my daughter is fine with them so I guess they will stay.
But again, I am not your normal tire person. Last year I bought a new Subaru Ascent (for when we need the additional room) and I replaced the stock tires at 500 miles. Interestingly I went with Toyo Proxes as the tire I had on the previous SUV was not available in that size. (Conti DWS06)
 
I really like my Toyos, I’m in Alberta and I’ve done fine with them since 2020. I checked in here to see if the all seasons would be ok for me and saw good reviews and one piece of advice that was essential; it was to be careful on the first snow because you need to adjust for the extra stopping distance so you don’t slide through an intersection. I feel you’re never going to get amazing traction on ice and all I know is that my last vehicle was much worse on ice and I learned to drive on the side with some snow to catch for traction. I’m nearly at 90000 km and I have no choice but to change them because they are bald (a lot of highway driving for work over the past 2.5 years). I was actually told to do it in January but thankfully because of the low snowfall I made it through the rest of last winter. I ran them all summer knowing that I would hydroplane in rain, but yet again my old Hyundai Elantra was much worse when it had bald tires, so I was good but wouldn’t have let anyone else drive it in those conditions. Now I'm biting the bullet and getting a new set and I’m back here looking for reviews because you can’t just get the same tires again 4.5 years later!

Oh I forgot this in my other post! Last service appointment when they told my that me tires were beyond done, they had a little video and pointed out that the wear was more in the middle of the tread, with more overall tread remaining on the sides, indicating that the tires were run over inflated.

My mechanic husband was precise on filling tires to the specs and he checks tires often, even when they look fine, if he’s already checking the other vehicles. So just a thing to watch out for with the toyos.
 
You have a mechanic husband who checks your tires and he let you keep driving on them?? :sneaky:

If only, then he would be paying for new ones. He saw how far I pushed my last car’s tires, so wasn’t too worried, but also wasn’t too worried because we were working on no longer living together 😂

I have the same tires and I'm at ~35k miles. Still, plenty of life left in them, at least enough to last till I swap em out next year. I'm very anal about tire pressures, my wife calls it something else... lol

Anyway, I inflate them to 38psi, rotate em per the manual, and they are wearing very evenly.

If your tires were wearing prematurely in the center then there's only one cause, they have been overinflated. Any idea what pressure your hubby has been inflating them to?
 
Overinflated tyres can be user error, or can be due to an inaccurate gauge.

You would be surprised how bad some of them are…

I often read of people complaining about them but I have not had any traction issues and I live in Montana where we get temps from -30F to over 100F and rain and snow and everything in between. My wife drives it to work on snowy/icy roads and I have asked if she wants winter tires and she said it handles great. (she grew up in Minnesota so used to winter too). To be honest I was kind of hoping they would be as bad as some say as I love getting new tires :).

Im with you. I just replaced my stock Toyo A36 19" tires as they were getting low and I got a huge screw in one of them. I chose the Michelin defender 2 tires. While I asm sure they are a fine tire for most apparently, they feel squishy compared to the stiff/performance feel of the Toyo's.

I am pretty sure I can swap out the Defender 2's but at a loss to what tire I should switch to to get that same feel I had with those Toyo's. Id just buy more A36 tires but they are only good for about 36k miles and Id like a tire to last a bit longer than that. Any suggestions? I live in FL so snow is not a factor.
 
Michelin PS4 AS or PS4 SUV summer ones.
The first will do you great. But since in Florida you can go ahead with proper summer tires too.

Id be all over the summer tires, but they are only rated for 20k miles and I dont want to have to drop another $1k on tires in 18 months.
 
Then may be go with the PSP4 AS as it is as close to a summer tire. In Fl you dont really need the aggressive winterish thread pattern of other AS tires. The toyo if you look at its thread pattern is summer-ish also.

ps the pirelli scorpion 3 AS may also be good if the price is much cheaper.

costco and discount tire/america tire have regular promos. Michelin has regular rebates too.

I have really been looking at those. Have you gone from the Toyo A36 to the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires? Just wanting a comparison, as what I like is apparently different to what others like. I guess I like that stiff ride vs the squishy ride of the Defender 2s, and I'm pretty sure Discount tire will only let me swap out new tires once with their 30 day guarantee.
 
Yes. I have multiple CX5 with 19" and I have tried
the Pirelli, Michelins - Defender 2, Primacy Tour AS, Cc2 and the PS4 AS. Driven each more than 1000 miles. Some 10-12k and live in no snow dry weather.

My top choices are the PS4 AS and the Primacy Tour AS (very expensive lately and not worth it anymore). The PS4 AS I think will give you what you are looking for.
Defender 2 is the most squishy of all. Costco and my local Discount Tire love to recommend it for no reason though.

the only 2 Michelins (n 225 55 19) worth it to me are the CC2 and the PS4 AS , depending whether you got snow or not.
Good luck with the choice and hope you find what you need. Tire choice is usually subjective, each person has different feel and views.

Dang, thanks for that very valuable information. I dont think I could have gotten better first hand recommendations anywhere else. I mean who h as multiple CX-5s with the exact 19" tires Im looking for?

Did you swap out the stock Toyo A36 right away or did you drive them awhile? How close to the A36 feel is the PS4 AS? Or Perelli Scorpions for that matter? They both look great in your photos BTW.

Price really isnt a concern. Not that Im rich, but the Michelin and Perellis are both about the same price locally for me.
