Hello all, I was days away from buying a CR-V until I learned about its oil dilution issues (among other issues). Long story short the CX-5 was number two on my list and is now number 1. but now Im wondering are there any common issues I should know about before I make the purchase?

Im looking to buy a used 2018 Grand Touring and was surprised to find quite a few around my area. Why are people turning them in?

The used 2018's you are seeing could be dealer loaner cars. Dealers typically use them as loaners for about 5K miles then sell them. We have had zero issues with our 2017 GT. It's a bit smaller on the inside than a CRV, but much more enjoyable to drive.
 
What's "quite a few"? People here are pretty damn happy with their cars. Myself included.
 
There is no point buying used CX5. You will pay the same as new. Across USA there is 1 2017 or newer CX5 used under $20,000. Only One car - across the whole country. So you will actually pay a premium for used. Absolutely not worth buying 1-2 year old Japanese marquees. 2014/15 is a good spot. Otherwise go new.

Except when you get a CPO, the warranty slaughters the "new" warranty, AND you pay less. CPO is the way.
 
The above posts are correct - most likely just dealer loan cars. And don't buy a "used" 2018 - the price would be about the same as a new one.

Depending on when you are planning to purchase, you might want to hold out until the announce the 2019's. There may or may not be a turbo in our future plus a handful of really nice goodies. But if that doesn't concern you - by all means get yourself a 2018! You won't be disappointed at all.

Quick side note - my wife and I both own CX-5s. She has a 2016.5 with 33k miles and I have a 2017 with about 5k miles. No issues with either of them. Love them both and will keep them for many, many years.

Agreed. Ill always go new too unless therere added features I dont like such as cylinder deactivation on 2018 CX-5.

A major difference between your 2016.5 and 2017 CX-5*s and new 2018 CX-5 is 2018 has newly added cylinder deactivation. Although the long-term reliability issues have been proven by others, but we have also seen complaints here on rough idle at stop lights from 2018 CX-5 owners, which didn*t happen on 2017 and prior MY*s CX-5*s.

Agreed. Oil dilution also happens more often in cold environment. This problem usually can be reduced by ECU software revision making better fuel injection control during cold engine start.

I don't think the oil dilution problem in the CX-5 is anywhere near the problems some CR-V owners experience. We have both a CX-5 and a CR-V and I peruse both boards. There's
mega complaints about oil dilution on the Honda board, not so much here. Probably due to Honda's 1.5T engine.

IMO we see more complaints on Honda*s 1.5T oil dilution is because there*re at least 3 times more CR-V owners in the US. Also I believe the new design with more ECU firmware bugs, along with turbo all contribute the oil dilution issue. We*ve seen report that Honda in China has revised the ECU firmware to fix the oil dilution issue on 1.5T, but don*t know if Honda USA would do the same. Apparently the oil dilution issue is not as severe as CVT vibration issue, or Honda USA should have done something on it like CVT vibration issue.

BTW, 2 friends have 2018 CR-V with 1.5T, and they haven*t noticed any oil dilution issue so far.

Have not seen many complaints about CX5 dilution. CRV's issue is much more common

Right, not too many at all. Was just pointing out that it does exist and is a problem for direct injection gas engines, primarily when driven in cold weather on short trips (city driving) where the engine doesn't get a chance to get hot enough to burn off the extra fuel.

Why? Its not like this forum suffers from a deluge of new threads each day. In fact, Im surprised/excited when a new topic actually pops up.

Also, Id hate for this place to become like the RAV4 forums I peruse for tips on my wifes car. That place is overwhelmingly snotty with their use the search feature responses. I hate that so much, haha.

A lot of topics get recycled here over the years. If more people would search, they'd probably get a more informative answer from people who don't frequent this forum anymore.

I've been a member of a Nissan forum since 2007, and this "use the search feature" response was widely used.
However, these responses for the most part came from a couple of snotheads that seemed to delight in giving that answer to almost every inquiry.
These guys were rather irritating, and fortunately have faded from the scene and made that forum much more user friendly.
Maybe the Rav4 forum is infected with the same snoots.
