Picked up our 2017 CX-5 last week from Northtowne Mazda here in Kansas City, MO. We got a good trade-in offer of $4,000 on our 2008 3 hatch w/ 119k miles, got the loyalty $500 and then another $850 or so through the S-Plan discount I'm eligible for through work so ended up at $31,403 for the car w/ everything, which we were very happy with and spent most of those discounts on accessories anyway. We drove it 1,000+ miles this past weekend to go to the Indy 500 so really got to break it in and see what it's like. So far, on 5 tanks, we're averaging 27 MPG with approx. 75% highway driving, so barely worse than our 3 was getting.

A few initial impressions good and bad:
  • Having a backup camera but NOT sensors that beep to help w/ distance is very confusing and almost caused me to bump into another car when I parallel parked it the first time. It's dumb/cheap that Mazda doesn't include it like every car I've ever driven w/ a backup camera, far as I can remember. I know I can add it as a dealer accessory for another $500 but that still seems dumb.
  • The lack of auto up/down functionality on 3/4 of the windows is also a weird cheapness thing, especially considering the Mazda 6 has it on all of them.
  • Also wish we had the option of cooled/ventilated seats.
  • Great highway car - quiet, firm but controlled and comfortable ride.
  • It's not fast, of course, but it is fun to drive - the transmission shifts nicely and I love the transmission automatically down-shifting and holding a gear through the corners when in sport mode.
  • The heads up display, radar cruise control, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring all work well together.
  • The front end, pretty as it is, is so blunt that the bugs pile up on it and I expect the paint chips to do the same. Getting a clear bra installed ASAP to cover the whole front end, part of the hood and the fenders too. Local estimate of that using Xpel (really good stuff) is $725, which seems well worth it to me.
  • Looking forward to getting the hitch, mobile start and other accessories we bought installed soon, though the reviews of the mobile start app and the fact that they're still on v1.0 of the app, 2 years after launch, is very concerning as far as Mazda really supporting it.

Looks great and I see you gave it a wash too. Nice review. All the stuff that is bugging you can be blamed on Mazda USA bean counters and marketing folk

I've never owned a car that received so many compliments. People typically comment on the color, but I know they're thinking about how they wish they were me. :p

That new soul red color is just too beautiful! It makes cars around it look bland in comparison.

Wish I knew who posted this.. showed up on mz247 fb page. Need to know if the lowering springs/coilover were swapped from gen1 to gen2.

That's a beauty. It looks great in the sun.

Thanks!
I actually wanted (and would have been easier to source) a Soul Red but my wife said no way. She was getting tired of red because the S4 was red as well as the RX7.
It actually started to grow on me tho. It has a lot more shine than my coworkers Nissan Rouge that she bought last week :-D
