2017 CX-5: Driven!!

Sometimes the dealers forget to lower the tire pressure from the shipping pressure (which is nearly 45-50 psi). This a big mistake because on a test drive the car will be much louder, ride rougher and have compromised handling. Not saying that's the case here, but it's something to look out for.

Didn't even think of that. Good to know, thanks.

Tire pressure was discussed on drives and he assured me the cars had been fully prepped with pressures set at or just slightly above spec. I'm the guy who usually checks all 4 before I even get in the car...forgot my gauge yesterday, but yes i often found high 40s psi!

Thanks Monterra for the review. I have a 2014 GT and I drove a 2016.5 GT and my impressions were similar to yours. I think it is hard to get a feel of something that is incrementally changed. Heck, I thought the CX-9 drove very similar to my CX-5! Personally, I am holding out for the Skyactive 2 engine or something with even more power (2.0T).

Am probably not going to test drive the 2017 CX-5 with the NA engine, but will definitely test drive the diesel version.

One question Monterra, were you able to drive on the highway and do some passing? I guess what I'm really asking is, did you notice the extra 3 hp? LOL

Australian car review of the new CX5 says:

Mazda's efforts to reduce the level of cabin noise have been extensive... and they've worked. New sound deadening in multiple points around the car – including underneath the rear end, the doors and the firewall (the wall between the engine and the cabin) – along with a thicker windscreen and better seals and panel gaps is just part of the fix for what was a noticeable weakness in the first CX-5. More insulation in the body pillars and more 'out of sight' carpet also reduce road noise levels in the cabin. In fact, Mazda says the reductions are the equivalent of dropping 20km/h in road speed.

So cruising at 75 MPH in a 2017 should be like cruising at 63 MPH in a 16.5

The first line from that link says no changes to the suspension???

I did one highway launch but didn't do a 60-75 hit- can't say I felt the 3 ponies though- new car is ~120lbs heavier than mine, so pretty sure its fully negated and then some. Maybe noticed less NVH on hard accel though on a positive note..

That's a big weight, shame really as every other car maker is trying to reduce weight.

It could be a bit embarrassing being passed by a older version with a better power to weight ratio. I have never owned a car heavier than 1725kg, sounds like new version is heavier, slower and with increased fuel consumption.

Is that what CX-5 owners want?

Ride borders on being harsh but acceptable to me on 19" wheels.

what I was hinting on was Mazda say they have improved the ride, lower friction dampers, different springs.
I really don't think that link is very accurate.

Is there something wrong with the current suspension? I'm not following.

Enough. Have you driven one yet? No? Okay then you have no idea what you are talking about. No. You don't. The car is fine. It's not a race car. You just come here and whine. Get in your "Rogue" and enjoy your life.

This is a forum.
Were people post opinions which will differ to yours and mine, get over yourself and read the views, without getting upset or taking the comments personally.

You are starting to Troll me, I will block your posts it you persist in your campaign, are you sponsored by Mazda?

I've got the high powered diesel but I'm sure that the lowest spec petrol versions hurtle past me on the motorway as I rarely drive flat out when there are other cars around. I would never get embarrassed by another car passing me or be interested in whether it was capable of doing so. I would be quite prepared to sacrifice some unnoticeable power to improve noise and ride although I often marvel at how smooth and quiet mine is. I'm eager to try this new one just to see what the difference can possibly be.

Hopefully the thicker windshield will reduce the cracking issue so many have experienced.

I would like to make a point regarding the "2016.5" model mentioned by the OP and I hope I will not upset the owners who were led to believe that they bought a different model that the 2016.
I own a 2016 and as far as I know, the 2016.5 is just the result of Mazda having decided in the middle of the year to repackage some options and to reflect it in the MSRP.
If you check NADA and KBB, there's no mention of the 2016.5 model.

Actually, Matty, I just put that guy on my ignore list as well. Much nicer when you can ignore the stupid people. I recommend it.

Also, I think most likely, the car with the added sound material will be just as quick as the prior version. What UBO (I think it was him) called for a while ago is what Mazda did but in a way that required much more work to reduce the hit to just 120 lbs and maintain the ride.

Excellent idea, Dougal. Ive just done it too. Dont need that kind of repetitive negativity. The UK forum people decided the same thing too.

Not one of us thinks we bought a different model. It was a "mid cycle refresh" not a true "new car". We know that. The grill was changed, minor suspension and sound deadening was added, the electronic parking brake and backup camera were made standard equipment.

Where are you getting that sound deadening was added? I've searched every release and every review I could find in case I buy a used 2016/2016.5 and can't fine any reference to that.

The 2016 got extra sound deadening, but its been posted that the 2017 has even more, so its now heavier.
