New 2017 CX-5 Revealed

Hi, Newbie here.

I was reading a lot of the threads here. I noticed quite a bit of criticism of the 2017 model. I'm not sure it's warranted.
I currently have a 2014 CX 5 Proactive (the mid class trim in Japan). We've just purchased the 2017 XDL package. It'll be our second diesel CX5, we really liked the first one. The newer one is much quieter. The interior is stunning and the navigation system is much better than the 2014. I particularly like the speed, signs, and directions projected onto the windshield. The visibility is also greatly improved. The new power lift gate (hatch) is helpful (I could have used it today.), very quick opening (unlike the Lexus and Hondas I've dealt with). The new front seats (powered) are so much more adjustable and comfortable than the older ones. The new one we are getting will be black, with a black leather interior, sun roof and 19" wheels (neither are standard with the Japanese luxury packages), and the Bose system. It should arrive by the end of March or first week of April (we'll get more info soon).

Interesting. So you have had a chance to take the 2017 model for a spin?

Did you try the new Bose system out - is it better than the old one?

Is there any noticable difference if we look at the engine and gearbox (quieter, smoother, faster etc)?

How did price compare for the 2017 versus what 2016.5 are listed at (with the same trim... understanding that there are goodies in the 2017 that weren't there in the 2016.5)?

1. Of course. I wouldn't buy it if I couldn't drive it. I drove over in my 2014, and hopped right into the 2017... it was instantly familiar yet different. Much more comfortable seats than the older one immediately, the ride was firmer. The navigation system ... which SUCKED in the older Japanese version was equal to the best lexus one I've used in the US and much better than the Toyota ones I've used. It handles multiple languages(a plus for my family) and it's considerably less annoyingly chatty than the older one.Having it project directly not the windshield was an amazing "I live in the future" moment... I thought it would be annoying - nope!

2. Bose sound system was much fuller sounding... and the power is there. I'm a DJ, music sound matters, so it took a lot of will power (and my wife's evil eye) to keep me from upgrading our old system; this new one, is great. Much like the Mazda 3 sound system upgrade last year, but I think it might be better... ask me again in month.

3. The new diesel is quieter, with a bit less rumble than the old one. I thought the old one was amazing, I didn't want a diesel initially - when the dealer brought both a gas and a diesel to my home (that's how they do it here), I was incredulous, no stink, no car shake, no rattle - the new one is an improvement. Japan only has automatics in the CX-5, but I noticed no problems with it, and a bit more "omphh" when I floored it. Smooth. I drove the mid level trim, the same as my 2014's, and it just felt more refined over all.

You won't confuse it for a BMW, but it is as upscale a Mazda as an Atenza (the 6 in the US). I then checked out the Luxury trim in the CX-3 and Atenza and what will be in the CX-5's interior. It's better. The photos and video don't really give it the same "feel", the new one feels much more spacious and luxurious overall. Glad I made the leap. I wouldn't have w/o the test drives.

In Japan, the 2017 actually priced out cheaper, but this is due to trade in values, for us to move to the new car than keep the older one - this is due to crazy Japanese road and vehicle taxes, that encourage new vehicle ownership. The 2016 and 2017 were similarly priced (in Japan).

Good news for the 2017. I will recommend my friends to try it before pulling trigger. Thanks.

Thanks for the info on new 2nd-gen CX-5. As I understand the Bose system in new CX-5 now has 11 speakers instead of 9. I also saw a new sub-woofer in spare tire area. But instead of keeping compact spare tire like CX-3 and CX-9, the spare is gone in new CX-5! Is this really the case that we lost spare tire when we have Bose? And where and what is the 11th speaker added?

Since the "spare tire" equipment from Mazda varies by the ship to country, it is difficult to say if the US version has also lost the spare, until we actually see a US version.

This is very true! And it really looked quite out of place, where the spare should be. I commented on it to my sales guy, and he called it an amp or something. I had to explain the subwoofer concept to him.

I don't have any info on the subwoofer in the new CX-5, but any chance it's like the one in my 2003.5 Protege5, which looks like this?:

It goes on top of the spare tire.

Thanx for the info.

The new CX-5 will be shown here in Europe next week at the Geneva Motor Show. And I think the car will go on sale late spring. Will take it for a spin when it arrives to my dealer.

This's JDM Bose subwoofer without compact spare in a top of line 2017 CX-5 XD L Package 4WD diesel:

⋯ The dealer sent me the following image that indicates the MT is dropped, but all articles seems to indicate that the MT would still be offered, and the Mazda site does not have the specs yet.

Looks like Mazda definitely has decided dropping the manual on CX-5! Now there're some more information exposed for US version new 2nd-gen 2017 CX-5:

  1. SA-G 2.5L now has 3 more hp at 187 hp with G-Vectoring Control.
  2. EPA fuel economy rating dropped - FWD from 26/33 to 24/31; AWD from 24/30 to 23/29. At least the ratings are more resembling real world gas mileage and EPA rating gaps between FWD and AWD are narrower.
  3. Bose system has 10 speakers instead of 11-speaker Bose setup like Japanese version. Is sub-woofer eliminated or something else?
  4. LED headlights now are available for all trims but GT gets AFS、LED fog lights、and "Signature" LED lightings. No more fog lights for Touring.
  5. Sport now gets the same rear seats as Touring and GT. Rear seats recline.

The new EPA for FWD seems to be due to added features and possibly more weight. Glad that on my 16.5 - Its a couple mpg better. The problem with CX5 has been, its so much fun to go from a stop and decent low end torque that i have atleast 10 odd rabbit sprints in it for fun and it screws my economy. Drastic change in my driving pattern - now I no longer get the 30 i was getting due to lots of stop and go sprinkled with 80 mph highway runs for short duration and bumper to bumper - now I am down 28ish. My avg. speed is down to 30 from 38 - not very ideal for it.

Well they definitely added features I wanted on mine. Except that liftgate. Lol.
But #noregrets. Happy with my 16.5. I am rooting for this car to sell like hot cakes and I will recommend others to wait for the 17 when asked.
