AC Compressor Fail? (Video) - HELP!

My wife just came home and reported that our MZ5 was making a loud noise while she was at a stoplight. I tested the car and couldn't replicate the sound until I turned the AC on. When I went to turn the AC off, it made a deep bassy whirring sound in the cabin. See video below for the sound:

Any idea what it is? I'm thinking AC compressor going out? When I'm looking in the engine bay, the sound is coming from the engine block and it's sound like a spinning gear noise slowing down.

I've heard that many times and our A/C worked great for almost 8 years. It's kinda like the sound of any A/C that's been working hard when it cycles.

If you have the money, you may want to drop by the dealer. It's possible yours is worse and there's a problem. Maybe a refrigerant level is down or something.

I wouldn't panic though.

We're gonna bring it to the dealer hopefully sometimethis week hopefully.

So you've heard that exact sound on your Mazda5? Does it happen only occasionally or pretty regularly? I have noticed the AC is still cold and works as should, but the sound is pretty loud and alarming...lol

Yours is louder, but very similar.

Did more searching and looks/sounds like this person had the same issue. His video is from the engine bay:
