New to forum getting cx-5

I have no issue with the nb1 1st gen nav. It's nothing special, but I don't see the practicality and tackiness of having a mounted phone or gps with a plug coming from it just have a fancier gps program. As long as your map is current you shouldn't have many issues.

Sure it's practical. I can move the GPS from car to car, easily update maps online. Yeah I may have to buy mounts for it, but I can place it where ever. And tacky? Oh no no Chris. Not tacky at all. A giant spoiler on a cuv? Now some will say that is tacky.

I have a large screen Garmin semi permanently mounted next to the A pillar. (I never remove it) It is wired into the fuse box and goes on and off with the ignition. I think of it as part of the cars instrumentation.

Mind taking a picture of your setup? Always curious to see people's setups.

Well I guess it comes down to opinions, perceptions and driver preference. When I see a gps or phone (gps) mounted it makes me think of older cars with dot matrix radios. Seeing as integrated GPS is offered on even the lowest price new cars (value priced Mirage also has Android Auto AND Crapple Carplay, and a larger display than cx-5), it's damn near standard. To me, it just looks old-fashioned, and if so equipped, redundant.

If your cell-phone is better than your NAV, the NAV needs work, IMO. Mazda scrimped on tech, there, which is why I have not bothered putting NAV in, yet. I am going to also look into seeing if I can get something like what AUDI uses that shows Google Street View wherever you are for visual ID of various locations, etc. on the move when hunting for hole in the wall places, etc. THAT was a nice feature! I think live traffic is bare minimum for NAV, which is why I say the '16 is the worst ever. Just my opinion, that.

honestly unless the traffic data is coming from google or like waze, it's a joke anyway. Just get out your smartphone and use apps that will contain actual live traffic that is up to date minute by minute. I paid for connected services on my old Hyundai for live traffic and one, it only had traffic info for main highways, and two, it was never updated promptly to make a difference. Just use google. That's why its so important to bring AA over to Mazda. Just too bad Mazda is lazy as hell.

I dunno where my previous vehicle's live data came from, but it was great. Avoided many slow-downs due to it. Also had live color weather radar that was nice.

sounds very similar to mine. I could access sports scores, full weather forecasts, and get this, stocks as well lol it wasn't terrible, but the main thing was that it only covered major highways. Plus it was $5/month. Not bad. I believe it's probably similar to what the 16 cx5 was suppose to come with. It was suppose to come with what is called "connected services" but for some reason, Mazda decided no. Why though? What reason? You would think car companies get a cut of the money from the connected services. In this case it for my Hyundai it was Sirius/XM. At least I think they would. Maybe not. But I just don't get why Mazda decided to not include it. My hope was that they were gonna start investing time into AA/Carplay but that seems like a wash as well. So it just really confuses me.

Yeah, it seemed very odd that I had a Touring with a NAV screen...and no NAV...and no XM/Sirius.

Well the navigation and screen being independent of one another seems to be a thing Mazda does. Which I'm actually okay with. As we know, many in car navigation systems just suck and don't compare to handheld navigation units, and more commonly now, smartphones. Yet I still like to have a screen in my car, specifically for back up camera. The no XM thing, is it odd but you're not missing anything. The quality is terrible.

I've always preferred in-car NAV and it worked great for me. It coupled with GPS, weather radar, and gave me a ton of read-outs, average ETA's, numerous routes, etc. I cannot think of anything my phone does that my 370Z or Jeep didn't do as well. I remain frustrated with the NAV situation, but it is a minor quibble.

Try out google maps, and particularly waze. You'll see the difference. Built in Navs with average ETAs and routes are meaningless unless they are up to date with the most accurate live traffic conditions. No connected service is as updated as google maps. And if they are, it's only your major highways. I mean just go to where you live in google maps view the roads at each red light, stop sign, even round-a-bouts. It is dead on accurate. Kinda scary actually. Not to mention services like waze are updated by those of us actually driving. Construction updates, hazards in the roads, etc. That app is damn impressive. And with AA's next update to incorporate Waze, we need mazda to get on it!

Even the new CX-9 fully loaded won't have AA or CarPlay.

Yeah its frustrating. An article I was reading discussed about the lack of AA. From the article. "When I asked Mazda representatives about Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support down the road, I was told the company is looking into it but will not support it until the user interface is perfected with its control knob interface". This was in regards to the CX9, but I would assume it would applicable to all Mazdas using the new infotainment system.

To me though, it's a complete BS excuse. There is no reason some hackers can get it on the system working 90%, yet Mazda, over 2 years now at least as partners set to support AA, haven't even begun to distribute AA in it's vehicles. I'm guessing there testing it out but its certainly not a priority to them. Even though clearly AA and Carplay are the future car infotainment systems.

Just like how the pano sunroof "costs mileage", rofl!

Yeah, let's do massive gram scale strategy and make the lightest, best handling crossover in it's class.... and then stick a heavy gimmick at the very top of the car because that's where we want the weight.

You're a genius, have you considered being an engineer?

Sorry, but a moonroof is not adding that much extra moment to the top of the car to seriously affect the handling of these vehicles. And they aren't much added weight to begin with. It's no more than the number of vehicles with roof rails and crossbars on all the time, and never used. Your suspension is going to affect your handling more than a little increase in CG when driving at the speeds common for a vehicle like this.

Have you ever done a weight and balance on a vehicle?

You also realize the new Porsche 991 911 has a pano roof option...right?

More in line with this segment...the Porsche Macan has a pano roof option. It would tear up a cx9 like a soft dinner roll...and Porsche is still happy to offer it with a pano roof. That should put the "it destroys performance " argument to bed. As to mileage...how? Even 250# is not going to kill mileage, or hardly be noted, unless taking 2 kids anywhere in your 7 seater suv is just a terrible idea for economy....
Pano does not harm aero. And weight is likely we'll under 200# added. There simply is no LOGICAL argument against it on a family suv unless you plan on heavy loads on roof racks, but that's not why mazda claims they 86ed it. They gave a total bs reason, considering what others offer and how those vehicles perform.

I don't think anyone has said that a sunroof destroys performance or kills mileage except you. The Mazda engineer said it has an effect on performance and mileage. This is true.
