Can anyone explain how the 2016 CX-5 Navigation system provides live traffic updates? Is it accurate? Also, is Mazda Connect a hard drive based system? Does it work well in general?

It updates every 15 minutes, or so it says...

My hand-held Magellan does alerts and offers re-routing but only works in certain areas like when I go to San Francisco in my work van. From what I can tell CX5 uses NAVTEQ so gets it from FM or HD radio. There are maps that show what cities/areas are covered for hand-held and in-dash.

Just sitting in the garage, there are three options on the Traffic Info page, the two options for live traffic are grayed out (only historical is accessible). And if I look at the traffic settings in the handheld Magellan there is a tiny antenna icon with and "X" on it. This does make sense when I look at the coverage maps. If/when I get out to SF in the CX5, I will have to check whether the live traffic options are still grayed out.

Hope you're right! Would be a huge let down if it couldn't integrate live traffic. Would make sense that it only works in metropolitan areas. I'm guessing that means, as you said, that it pulls from HD radio.

I am still confused.

1. I know that under the Apps section, there is live HD radio traffic updates.
2. Is there live traffic updates for the navigation system too? If so, how do you enable it to see it on the maps. I've looked at the different options and cannot figure it out

Thanks.

I was told by a sales manager that you have to turn on your phone's personal hot spot feature to get live traffic on the nav.

Set a new destination then goto the "i" icon & press stick which brings up screen with current status (grayed out if not in covereage area):
(route) DELAY [in minutes]
(traffic) EVENTS [description]

And:
Show All Events (grayed out if not in covereage area)
Current Traffic Flow Overview (grayed out if not in covereage area)
Traffic History- overlays historical data on map
Traffic Settings- toggle Use Historical Data, Traffic, Offer Detour, Auto Accept Detour, Detour Sensitivity.

Nah, don't believe it.

Yeah I wouldn't buy that for a second that you have to use your phone as a hotspot. Don't have the car yet but that just does not make sense. On my current car(when I had traffic, just disabled it actually) the roads would just light up green/yellow/red for the amount of traffic. Do you guys see that happening at all? This only happened on major highways though.

My 2013 did just that. This one does not. When I'm due for my 5000 mile service, I'm going to get someone to show me how to use this thing. LOL!

It used the phone hotspot?
So your car had a Wifi reception? For what purpose, just for NAV traffic?
Was there an app on your phone that interfaced with the NAV? Or did it just magically happen in the background without any permissions on the phone?

Not live while driving, but if you go to Traffic History then it will display the roads in green/yellow/red.

I would think that traffic history is OK for predicting traffic, but not great. My 2014 just uses HD radio to get traffic and I've found it to be pretty accurate, it's re-routed me around accidents on several occasions.

From everything I've read, Mazda Connect does not input live traffic updates into its navigation. Apparently there is another screen you can see it on, but unfortunately, it does not go directly to the map.
