Is there a Heavy Duty Rear Strut for the First Gen Mazda5?

the KYB's will be decent OEM replacements. I would get something better built, like Bilstein or Koni. Bilstein HD's built for the mazdaspeed3 would be an excellent upgraded replacement.

If both had blown at the same time I'd have done that. But with one OE on the driver, it would upset the balance to go with one HD and one non-HD.
I'll keep that in mind next time one blows. Thanks.
the KYBs I listed should be a good match to what Mazda just put in though?

Get 2 new shocks, then put the junk OE one on craigslist for some nave fool. You don't want to have it on the car, since it WILL fail again, but by then, the other rear will have some wear, but not enough to warrant replacement. The KYBs are like $40 each shipped and you can easily DIY if your bolts are not caked in gunk.

Sorry, but I am no fan of the "what it takes to get by" theory of car maintenance, so you can totally disregard my opinion here.

You could also experiment by getting the KYB Gas-A-Just monotube rears for the '12+. AFAIK the only difference in the rear setup is the stiffer spring rate. I don't see how having a bit more cushy springs could ruin monotubes vs. generic twin-tubes. One way to check may be to find out if the Bilsteins are the same PN for 06-10 and 12+. I have the Gas-A-Just on my V70 with Koni Yellows up front and much thicker swaybars (25mm vs 21mmF/19mmR OE) and I haven't found a reason to dislike twin-tube fronts/monotube rears yet.

I brought kyb rear shock and just had them replace and they are amazing so much better then the stock.
