Fill oil up to the top mark?

Took my wife's CX-5 in to the dealer today for the first oil change and noticed that it's only up about 1/4 of the way between the min and max marks, even after sitting for a couple hours. I've done thousands of oil changes in the past when I worked in a shop, and on just about every car I've worked on, the recommended capacity came up to the top mark. I haven't had much experience with the new Mazda's, and after reading a few posts about oil levels rising, just wanted to make sure it was normal for these cars.

I've change my oil twice now and both times the recommended fill brings it up to about 1/4" to 3/16" from the full mark.

According to the owner's manual it states to add enough oil to bring the level to full.

I'm curious why for U.S. and Canada it states to use 0W-20 but for Mexico it's 5W-30. Isn't it the same engine? Would the 5w-30 offer better protection?

By the way, here's what they consider "normal" apparently.

Maybe in extreme hi temps (parts of Mexico), but in North Hollywood? No.

Assuming you took the reading correctly (after letting it sit overnight on level ground) that's low and they should top it up for you.

Your answer is right there on page 6-22 of your owner's manual. Lots of good info in that book. :-)

"The level is normal if it is between Low and Full. If it is near or below Low, add enough oil to bring the level to Full."

Every new car I have purchased always comes with the lowest amount of fluids possible. Whether its oil, coolant, etc. Over thousands of cars the savings ads up.

My CX5 came with the oil level within 1/8 inch of the max/full hole and when I change oil, I do the same. I'm not sure if the dealer or manufacture did it but, ALL fluids were at or near the full level. Ed
