On Track to Purchase a CX5....then I saw a 2014 Jeep Cherokee

I have a 2014 GT AWD and I have not had any of the issues listed, and I'm sure that there are many others who haven't had these problems also. IMO the listed issues wouldn't stop me from buying a CX-5 as a past Jeep GC owner I would never repeat never buy another one

My wife and I just bought the CX5 after researching/driving/scrutinizing every other comparable vehicle out there. The last vehicle we looked at before buying the Mazda was the new Cherokee, because my wife was previously driving a 98 Grand Cherokee that she adored. Our joint consensus was that the new Cherokee is the second ugliest car ever made, next to the Pontiac Aztek. Needless to say, we didn't bother driving it.

I've test-driven both the Limited and Trailhawk trims. Both with the v6 engine.

I have to say, I'm impressed. The car looks much better in-person. there are many more luxury features (memory seats, mirrors, heated steering wheel, HUGE sunroof) that the CX-5 doesn't offer. No V6 in the CX-5, either. I thought the driving experience was comparable (i have an accord V6 coupe and toyota mr2 spyder, now so i do enjoy 'the drive').

If you want to do some serious off-roading (i don't) nothing in the segment will beat the trailhawk trim.

pricing right now is comparable. a major dealer in my town is advertising them for 9% off MSRP so i can get a very nicely equipped 4WD LIMITED trim with a V6 for the price of a AWD GT with tech.

just my two-cents.

What features are you getting for the price of a CX-5 AWD GT with tech (assuming under $31k OTD)?

i'm going to assume you mean what does the cherokee limited trim offer that the cx-5 AWD GT with tech doesn't?

v6 engine
9 speed tranny
separate modes for snow, auto, mud/sand, sport
memory seats
garmin based nav system with 8 in screen
memory mirrors
heated steering wheel
HUGE sunroof
heated seats that get hot (unlike the lukewarm cx-5's)
remote start

there's more, but look at the limited trim on the website. no need to re-type it here.

have you seen it in person?

i will say i think the cx-5 is a very good looking vehicle on the exterior.

The interior isn't much better than exterior...image.webp

By now Jeep Marketing people probably have some scripted/standard excuses for the styling mess. Regardless people at car show avoided it, I was only one looking at it.

I think the Cherokee looks ok (not great). It is certainly a bold polarizing design.
In this group, the back of the CR-V, front of the RAV-4, Tuscon, Forester all look questionable at best.
I would not buy a Chrysler product, because of concerns about reliability, especially with the Fiat sourced 2.4L engine. However, this vehicle can be equipped with a real low-range transfer case, under body plates and locking differentials. It is significantly better in this regard than anything in this segment.
The 9 speed AT, on the other hand, is clearly there for fuel economy. While driving, it constantly shifts which is something you may need to get used to. For people who think about towing, the larger V6 and towing package along with this transmission can get you 4500lb of towing capability.

Personally, I don't need any of these capabilities, I do wish the CX-5 has a diff lock option (similar to the RAV-4, Rogue), but otherwise the capabilities of the CX-5, fun to drive factor, fuel economy and looks are right for me.

Jeep is capable of making attractive SUVs, the JGC is a very good example.

Let's see how quickly they replace/fix/restyle the front cap.

The new Cherokee is a great entry into the CUV market. Both the premium and trailhawk both look pretty sick, with the road version having a wide wheel base and extremely sick camber. That said, I've never owned nor will own a Chrysler product, especially under Italian control.

I'd garage a Wrangler (if I won one free) and use it for fun only.

The last decent Cherokees were the ones with the straight sixes that could run for 200K miles.

And back to Chrysler. Pick a model, any model. You see them on the roads for 7-8 years, then they magically disappear. Your risk, your potential loss.

Chrysler build quality has always been an issue, I had a Dodge van I used at work and by 36k things were falling apart.

The Jeep/FIAT/Alfa platform the Cherokee is built on is a big question mark. I've owned a few FIAT's in the past and worked for them six years but I think the Mazda is a better make.

The new Jeep Renegade sounds pretty good. Of course it's Italy built quality with Jeep engineering...looks are relative, but I think it looks pretty good.

Could be worth a look when it hits the dealers late this year/early next.

Renegade looks a bit cartoonish, but amusing. Aerodynamics are suspect. Probably expected to be priced low so it could be popular.
