Ford might just steal me away from Mazda...

So I got to the SEMA show today for setup and took a look at some of the new Transit Connect vans that Ford has on display. I could really see myself switching over to one of them. They had a few still under cover and were trying to keep people out of their area that didn't belong there just yet. Will grab some pics tomorrow. A few of them were pretty hot.

Based on all the pictures of it, it looks pretty damned awesome. There are two wheelbases available! Tons of features, attractive, etc. I'm pretty pumped for it, especially since the first gen almost got my money.

Yes, they call it the Transit Wagon. You can build one on their site:

Wrong truck, this is a monster. The one coming is a smaller version of this, more lie 5.

After changing out a ton of parts that all say FoMoCo on them, I am beginning to question my sanity in my crush on the Flex. I wonder if, after replacing all these Ford parts on the Mazda5, if getting a Flex would mean I would end up replacing all the Ford parts on it! Since its based on the Volvo P2 platform, at least I wouldn't be swapping out the FRAME, just everything that bolts to it......

Careful....many fords are the bottom lists on consumer reports while on the other hand, 2013 Mazda 5 took the first spot for Wagon - though it's not categorized as minivan.

And seeing how many people on here already complain about the 5's HP, the 5's 20 + extra hp will seem like a dream, after you drive a transit that is around 130 HP, it takes everything it has to even get up to highways speeds on an on ramp. It definitely is a dog, in the HP depart. Don't know about the new one, but the 2012 transit I drove in down right sucked big time on getting any kind of power out of that small engine.

It looks like the new one will have the 1.6T ecoboost, so it should move better than the 2012 model.

Well working out of one, I can say that they are pretty decent vans, but the two big complaints about the van is what people around here complain about the 5, but it was only much worse with the transit. The transit was built on a car platform and the suspension is a problem, they are hard to keep in alignment, and tire wear is excessive. Way more than on the 5. The other complaint was the lack of HP, which appears to be something they are going to fix. I don't know if they will bring their regular 2.5 to the states, but that will be their more powerful engine, followed by a 1.6 ecoboost and a 1.5 ecoboost. So, power will be more adequate than it was, but the transit is heavier than the 5, and the 2.5 that the second generation 5 has is just adequate. That was the worst thing about the previous transit, it was such a dog on HP, that even a 30 HP bump may make it bearable. They are also doing away with the antiquated 4 speed tranny and replacing it with a six speed. Seeing as how the transit is heavier than the 5 and nowhere near as aerodynamic, the real world fuel economy on the 2012 was high teens to low 20's. I could see Ford getting the highway miles up to 24 on these, but I don't see them getting them in the high 20's like the 5. Granted, they may have beefed up the suspension a little, we were using them as work vans, which were loaded down all the time. I mean it is a trade off from the 5, lose the handling and fun to drive factor, take a 3-5 hit on the mpg's, and get a even slower accelerating vehicle than the current 5, but gain an additional seat with more room for all the passengers. I can tell you though, all fun factor driving will be thrown out the window with the transit.

Oops...guess I took his question a little too literally. The larger version is the Transit and the smaller one is the Transit Connect.

Yeah, the transit connect is what we drove at work. Can't speak about the bigger version.

That is ugly... I'm sure the raised roofline and straight vertical tailgate will open up the interior/trunk but it is still smaller and completely takes away from any design element (not that 2012+ are anything to brag about). The front of the A pillar disconnetcs from the rest of the car, like someone just stuck on their signature face without consideration of the rest of the car. If someone is going to consider this, mind as well go for a utility van. IMO, vehicles like this is suited for special needs folks where "needs" come first. If Ford makes this, why can't they bring over the Grand C-Max!?....

Here are some of the new Transit Connect vans they had on display. They look better in person and the darker colors do better on the snout. And these things are noticeably larger than a 5 but still didn't seem quite up to Odyssey/Sienna/Caravan size. And I like the built in roof rails. ******* brilliant. Those things look designed specifically to accept a set of Thule or similar cross bars.

Horsepower and handling are the two big concerns. I can testify from experience they are more top heavy and not as aerodynamic as the 5, which means handling suffers, and Ford did a really slack job on Horsepower and the suspension. No power whatsoever to speak of, and struts and shocks aren't beefed up enough. Ford will really have had to modify it to address those two areas of concern, not just put a slightly larger engine in them, and put new sheetmetal on them to make them look more appealing. It will be interesting to see what they have done, as more info comes out.

Sorry, I do not see the appeal. To me, this looks like a slightly smaller Dodge Sprinter. It has its purpose but not typically cross shopped with minivans. Curious, did you ask your significant other’s opinion?

Regarding engine, Ford could put in one of their EcoBoot enignes.

These share nothing with the existing Transit Connect vans. I've driven those. They sucked.

It has either the 1.6 ecoboost or the normally aspirated 2.5.

I didn't consult with the SO as it would be mine. I only thought about this as these are now tow rated. I sometimes tow a light trailer which I can't do with the 5. I also have a Dodge Dakota for work duty. This thing could replace both. I wonder how much that 1.6t can put out with some tuning?
