a guy came into my work with a bad ass sounding protege5,i went to go take a look under the hood and it was turboed. he said it came on the car when he bought it. it says high boost on the front pipe... it was also an auto. and maaaaan did he leave rubber on the asphalt when he took off. anyone out there every had/ worked on one? and are they still available? dude said he put 40,000 miles on the car since he got it, never had a problem... as well as never having a problem beating ANY car.. i want one! however thats the first time ive seen one... any input will help! thanks

NOTE: the reason i am asking is because it was a turbo set up i have never seen before, and it looked amazing in quality.

the guys name that made them i believe was Juan at TBK performance in florida if IIRC. but they are no longer produced. its an old school set up that used to be made. you can probably find one floating around once every few months or so, but i dont think too many were made .

aww man, that was a NICE set-up. hopefully someone still has one and will put it up for sale soon. all the kits ive seen all look about the same, this guy said he had a diff ecu that probably came with the turbo. stock green n purple injector set up though, it looked easy, and bolt-on as it gets. atleast from the set ups ive researched.

I think most of the Hiboost setups were using the older Haltech F10x standalone ECUs. Just realized you are in TX lol

yea, im planing on boosting so ive been looking... and yea i am in TX is that bad? lol

ok so no more high boost. Hopefully somone with one sitting around sees this thread and replies with an offer to get rid of it!

haven't seen a hiboost setup on here for a long time. TX, not bad. Just saw your location and figured I'd point it out. I live in the Ft. Hood area. You would have better luck finding a stock MSP setup and running that

so i work at Caterpillar and theres an old motor laying around would a turbo off one of those work?

depends on the flange type and definitely the size. Is it internally or externally gated? or variable vane?

you lost me there. its a smaller turbo but i figured if i can get it free then its worth a shot. what should i look for?

if you work at Cat, then it's a diesel motor right? If so, it could be a variable vane turbo. More than likely it's that or the turbo has an internal wastegate. If you can, post a pic of it whenever you get a chance when you go to work. The type of flange the turbo has determines what type of manifold you will have to replace your header with. T2 flange like the stock MSP t25 or t28 series or T3 flange like most GT30 series turbos. Is it both oil and water cooled? Ball bearing or journal bearing? This all comes into play that way you know what you are dealing with and what else you will need to acquire to make a reliable setup.
Just realized you are from TX too, What part of TX are you in?

I've only seen 1 HiBoost setup and it was at a swapmeet here in Houston a few years back.

I almost got it before I blew the FS and went v6.

I'll try to get some pics later. Im down in Waco.

well i got the car for cheap, smached from the front i kinda fixed it, smashed it again n i got read ended too lol. but i like the lil peice of s*** car and how it handles so im going to put a turbo on it, cuz lets face it... the car has some serious power issues. i was thinking about keeping it auto and thats why i was so excited to find that turbo kit. now that i know it is gone, im thinking of just swapping to a 5 spd and getting a cheap/reliable LSD (by cheap i mean less than the $1000 the MSP one costs.) i guess i will build my own turbo set-up since the protege is being turned into a project car. i have no kids, no big bills....but the worst part... NO GARAGE. :/ im going to start a build thread since i will be doing some work this weekend which is what is starting my project. Any set up or turbos you guys reccommend would be greatly appreciated.
