It's things like this, consistently, everywhere I see you on this board, that make me think you're a king when it comes to taking care of customers. All I can say is, don't worry so much about it. You're making 100% customized parts for a range of cars that never had this kind of equipment before; little things like this are bound to happen. And you're addressing the issue in top-notch fashion. I suspect that the few folks that are having the issue are all supercool about it, and are perfectly happy to work together with you to solve it. Your posts since the discovery have a shade of panic and self-butt-kicking (and I see it because I do the exact same thing to myself) and I really think it's unnecessary. You've made an amazingly awesome product that is making a lot of people happy, and a few of them need a slight tweaking to be perfect. As far as I can tell, you've got a 100% success rate with this thing. So don't panic and don't self-punish. Put on a grin and be proud. You're kicking ass.
All that being said - if I can get the scratch together by a week from this Wednesday, I might really like to pick one of these up. If the remaining available stock is depleted, is there a possibility of another run being done soon?
I have my full NA system now installed on a P5, and car is running exceptionally well...i went to this system from a stock intake with a drop in K&N, twiggy cams, Mp3 computer, Mazdaspeed header, and RB cat back with custom mid pipe...throttle response is outrageous, and the sound with these cams...it really seems like a different car...
Please wait for Rich's template (I'd be happy to give feedback with that rich when you start playing around with it). I spent a good 3 hours back and forth slowly making adjustments to the box sidewall, but now knowing exactly what needs removed...i could do it literally in less than 30 minutes. I just used a 5 speed dremel with a cutting wheel and a stainless 'bar bur' to finish smoothing the edge...the rubber trim still fits perfectly...from the engine bay; you'd never know i had to do anything...i'm not perfectly finished, but have it close enough to fit everything and do a few test drives...
so to anyone worried about taking this on, don't be...my gf could've done it...and its an area so hidden, you'd never be able to tell...
some pics of it installed...i had the car parked in 90 plus degree sunlight, and my plexi glass epoxy let loose...so the top is now sitting downstairs with a fresh bead of high temp gasket maker, and a few clamps...i'm sure that'll hold the glass on fine, and i was probably just unlucky with that...easy fix if you run into it, though...

sorry about the bad lighting, and again, this was only a test fit to make sure everything fit ok...i'm going to run that coolant line under the maf to hide it, and do some more work on the stock reservoir bracket and mounting location...i need to trim it a little, as you can see from one of the pics...but it easily fits in front of the battery on the remaining stud from the stock intake...i just had to drill one of the holds out about 1mm to fit it over that exposed stud...and used the same 10mm nut to tighten it down...
and Rich, exactly what sleepwalker said...you offered by far the greatest intake system that ever became available for these cars...some slight modification to a completely custom designed limited run product is completely ok imo, and i'm sure others...when people see how little work is involved, there won't be any issues...Couldn't be happier with this thing man, one of my favorite mods so far...and i've been messing with this thing for 11 years haha.
I have oil catch can and coolant overflow that would have to be relocated but by the looks of things in your pics, my ballast for HID on that side could just stay where it is now. The trimmage to fit around headlight is not what concerns me. My question would be....do the 2 rubber 90 degree elbows give enough flex for motor movement?
Finally picked up my box after it had been sitting at the post office for over a week. Excellent packaging as always, Rich. I'll have installed pics up after I re-arrange some things under the hood to make this all fit.

Finally today i have receive my box.. all i can say its ******* awesome. No words to describe how satisfied i feel. It has been worth every second ive waited for it. s*** looks massive.. will post pictures...
I got my box today in the mail. Looks good. I'm excited to get polishing. Hoping to hear word on the template for cutting mine to match the p5 headlight.
Awesome. Glad there weren't any other little things that popped up like the light harness being in the way or something. As for the glass... the silicone I used said it was good to 200* F... so I thought it would be great for our application. If it let go on yours just from sitting there in 90* sunlight that concerns me. I hope this isn't another major issue with these.![]()
I'm not sure why UPS is dicking around with this headlight shipment, but it didn't even leave it's original location until Monday night (was supposed to be here that day). Tracking says it will now be here Friday... not too stoked about that. I was going to be leaving to go out of town Friday morning for a weekend golf tournament, but I re-aggravated an old shoulder injury yesterday and have to withdraw. I will prep the MSP tomorrow so I can just drop the P5 light in right after it gets here, and it shouldn't take me long to get the template made for you guys.
Thanks again everyone for being so cool about this project. My stress level has been through the roof ever since I lost my friend in January, so it was really nice to have such a huge amount of positivity and understanding come my way. We'll get this wagon light thing taken care of before the weekend is up and everyone will be all set.![]()
Do you have a black NA kit with blue filter left or am I gonna need to wait and hope for future batch?
Well its hard to tell in my case... it was over 90 degrees ambient outside that day, and the lid was sitting in direct sunlight snapped onto the box...It very well could've green-housed the s*** out of itself haha, and with a black coating...it very well could've hit that temp...I have a black weber smoker sitting out there too, and on days when its that hot with direct sun, the lid temp in that will register 175+ degrees all the time BEFORE i even load it with charcoal...i almost could cook with the damn thing for completely free haha...and that thing doesn't have a clear window to heat the air inside...
really doesn't matter though...i put a bead of 350 degree rtv right over the original sealant (which was still tacky)...and its holding up great...if anyone runs into the same issue...its a 5 minute/$3 problem...
this box makes such a great sound...it dampens it a bit compared to a full CAI, so you never hear that obvious suction noise, but the bark it makes at full throttle is simply awesome...and with these lopey cams, low speed full throttle makes this unique growl, that sounds sort of similar to an unequal primary boxer layout...i've never heard an NA or even turbo FS sound like this...i'm still thrilled man, great product!
Only thing i have left is just a little more work on the couplers and clamps to make it a little more permanent looking...and to adjust my TAS screw on the TB, which i've had to play with a lot to keep from stalling with these cams and an mp3 ecu...since the new intake, i haven't popped a single p0300 on idle warm up (very regular on the original intake), but i get a good bit of hiss from the cone only at idle because of the screw setting...i can close that off more, and still won't be close to stalling...it seems to build idle vacuum much better that the factory intake allowed...
Thanks for all your hard work among other things in life Rich. I'm really happy with the way the box looks.
Excited to get this box in and finish up my bay. Thanks a million Rich!
Here is my current setup............I have 2 black boxes left, but the piping and filter I can do however you want. I didn't make extra piping kits so it will be built after you order. You have the option of breather port (yes/no), coupler color (black, blue, red), and filter color (blue, red, yellow).
Here is my current setup............

Looks like I might could just do black box, blue elbow coupler & cut me a short piece of 3" pipe I already have to get connected to where the MAF already is in the pic and move overflow back towards battery.........thoughts?
Ok I think I have watched this thread long enough. Lol I was wondering the final details on the cab msp kit. What all does that include exactly? Also on the msp kit do you have to run the k&n filter? Or is it just easier to run that filter? I am intrested in this box, allthough I did not want to spend 300 bucks on a intake either way, I wanted to make my own. But this one is looking better and better the more I look. What is the min deposit as well? And how long till I could get one with blue everything besides box, I would like polished alum.
Thanks!
