Pablo's MSP maintenance thread

The first time I took my left side off I had to use a 4ft pipe on the end of a breaker bar and a friend to hold the socket straight. That was fun, NOT! Good luck Pablo. Did you get a chance to measure the lengths of those extra springs?

We used a breaker bar, and the extension from the jack... Evan was holding the socket in place. I totally forgot, I'll measure them today.

Ah...too low for me.

I'm want to try out a set of springs in the 400 range on the uneven parking lot surfaces for autoX. Last weekend my car was skipping around like a rock on water.

Couldn't get the left axle nut off, but got the side side apart. Replaced the drive shaft and will press the bearing tomorrow. Will take care of the other side either on the weekend or early next week.

Harness has been shipped, should be here on Friday.

I'm surprised the left side is giving you trouble. That is the one I had to replace at the track so it was put on with an electric impact. I was worried about it being too loose. In general they suck without an impact though.

That's what I was thinking...

I'm gonna have to take them to a shop, Marc couldn't get the bearing out of the right side, and the bearing came apart so half of it is stuck to the hub...

They are al like that Pablo. you have to take a cut off wheel and cut into the inner race that is on the hub at an angle, but you don't have to cut all the way through. Then hit it with cold chisel and hammer on the cut line and it will crack from the pressure and wedge right off. Almost all of the wheel bearings for Protege's do that. give it a light cleaning with a scrub pad and a light coat of grease and your in business :)

Marc mentioned that, but we couldn't get the rest out so we called it quits. He didn't want to blow the cylinder on the press, and there were no torches to heat it up.

They press out really hard. I thought I was going to kill my new Harbor Freight 12ton press, but it managed to push them out.

If you're still having trouble with the axle nut on the left, I just placed the socket on a jackstand to keep the pressure even and straight on to the nut and used a4 foot pipe on a 1/2" driver. Had to pretty much jump on it (quickly I might add) but it managed to get it off. If I eased on the bar instead of one quick motion it would just rock the car forward.

Thanks to pringles, got the left hub off. We couldn't get the axle off though, is there a secret to this or do we just have to keep using pry bars?

Heat and soak is all I can say. I had a similar problem when doing the engine swap in the civic. Took almost a week to get it out.

His axle isn't popping out from the transmission case. Pringles sent me a link to a snazzy axle puller that doesn't tweak the CV joints he may pick up.

My only advice was a pry bar between the case and axle. It's worked every time for me.
