Latest TomTom update allows Voice Control while driving?

I test drove a new 2014 CX-5 GT, and I couldn't set destination with voice commands while driving.
I found a discussion about this in the TomTom forums: http://discussions.tomtom.com/t5/Bu...Voice-Control-while-driving-issue/td-p/330912
It looks like originally, the car came with v10.815 that allowed this feature. Than came the v10.816 update that locked this feature.
There is a new version v10.817 that I hope someone has installed and can confirm whether this works again.
I guess that they factory update the latest batch of cars they send with the latest software, but I am not sure what version they had on the car I test drove.

I also found links to the older version: http://www.mobilescommunity.com/tomtom-navcores/194666-nacore-10-815-mazda-nb1-live.html
Maybe we can revert back the system.

I would love to figure out a way to get rid of all the safety features, and I don't think Mazda or TomTom will be forced to do this any time soon.

I have 10.817 and can use voice command to drive to an address or poi while driving.

There is an issue with voice command where, when the car is beginning to accelerate and the "Safety Lock" feature kicks in, that voice command is ended. But after SL kicks in you can use VC. I have heard that TomTom is working on cleaning that up so it doesn't stop VC when SL kicks in but that's a bit beyond the scope of your question.

Aside from the issue of VC at the moment SL kicks in, 10.817 will allow you to use VC to drive to an address or a poi while driving.

Hello All...

I've never owned a car with a built in GPS, so a lot of this new to me.

How can I find out what version software is on my SatNav, and how would you update it?

Thanks..!!!

If you have the CX-5 you have the NB1. You can find the version and map info by going to the Setting Menu and then Version Information. You'll see a screen that looks something like this:
large

Notice that the current App version is 10.817 and map for USA is v905. Depending on where you live, your map version may be different. You can find the latest map versions listed here.

To update the NB1, you use software called TomTom Home. You can find instructions on how to download it and install your map here. You will also use TTHome to update your App version and other things - once you have it installed it will help you. Just be sure you have a different email address for each of your TomTom devices so if you have another TT GPS that you update, you'll not want to use that email address since each device has a different account and that is linked to your email.

You can find answers to a lot of questions about the NB1 here too, if you feel like exploring. :)

One more thing - if your NB1 is new, you get your map upgrade for free using TomTom's Latest Map Guarantee. See here for how to do that. Enjoy!

Thanks for the location of the info.

I have done all the updates you mention via TomTom Home.

:)

Thanks for the guide!
Now I know the limitations of the voice commands.
It is kind of disappointing that they can list all the POI in two pages, but I guess you are not going to explorer on it as much as you would with Yelp and Google on your phone.

FYI 2014's come with an 8 gig card.

My 2014 came with a 4 gb card. But I replaced it with an 8 gb. :)

I know what you're saying but it's also true that the guide is dated July 2012, and you can add more POIs via TT Home or your own. I have found it to have most of the main ones I'd want and I'm not sure if it had a ton more if it wouldn't result in a slower response time to VC as it searched through all the POIs on the card.

i'm really annoyed that the poi's dont have a greater amount of classification....

no grocery shops or convenience store, sporting goods, etc
or differentiation for restaurants...very very poor development on tomtoms part...

Ugh, I just ran into that issue tonight, was looking for grocery stores, and there's no POI for grocery stores!!! had to pull out my phone for google maps.

they're in there you just have to scroll through the entire list of 'shopping' or 'shops' to find them
no idea what those dopes at tomtom were thinking...
anyone that had standalone tomtoms before have they always done this?

If you're not finding what you want via TT's updates, you can check out http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles . I have found grocery stores there that are not available elsewhere.

its not necessarily that the stores aren't available in the list, its that they dont have their own categories (along with restaurant styles like 'chinese' 'steak' 'barbeque' etc), they're just lumped into 'shops' or 'shopping' so its impossible to navigate to any of them using the voice control (or even the on screen controls because of the onerous burden of scrolling through dozens of pois that may have nothing to do with the category your looking for

Oh yes, I totally agree. If you are stuck with "drive to the nearest restaurant" in a populated area - forget it. The list is too long. It would be so much nicer if you could filter by type or have tags associated with them.

my cheapo mio from like almost ten years ago had sub categories for all those pois why can't this new fancy module have it...

i suggest everyone to to the tomtom support site and file an email question like i just did about this category issue, here's what i put in mine

product-mazda nb1 category-updating software subject-poi categories said:
the poi's are almost useless for those types that most people would use most often with the voice or on screen controls.
you must add subcategories or break up the shops/shopping and restaurant lists into different types. it is patently unacceptable that you can not 'drive to nearest grocery store' or 'find nearest pizza'. my decade old MIO freestanding gps could do that easily.
currently your software requires you to, on screen only, select 'restaurants' or shops/shopping, then scroll thru dozens and dozens of results that are not relevant to maybe find what one is looking for, this being practically impossible using the voice system.
please update the software to make these changes, I had called before about this issue and was told last year that it would be mentioned to the development teams.
