The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Home inspection went well, little issues here and there. No major issues, biggest is the basement wall cracking and moving inward but that's typical around here and we're going to ask for a credit from the sellers so we can take care of that after we move in.

Um, isn't there some sort of rule against posts depicting street racing.
Hope they go for it Nate. The last thing you want is your basement wall caveing in.

I think they will, We're getting a quote to have a reference on paper but it seems to be around $1,000 or less. The sellers already have a new house so they're motivated to this done.

The dreaded double mortgage is a great motivator.

It made negoiations easy. We came in with a low but fair offer to see how much they were willing to come down and what they will cover as far as closing costs etc., The came back below our target price and agreed to everything else.

Got my new summer wheels today (yippy) and I should be able to mount the new Continental DW tires tomorrow. If the weather is good this weekend, maybe I'll take a few photos and post them up.

Also, I need to buy new front brake pads as they're very low. I'm trying to decide what pads I want to use now. The past 2 times I replaced the pads, I used EBC Yellow Stuff. They perform really well for Street/Track pads. They don't make noise on the street and bite better than stock when cold. On the track, they do an excellent job, but I think I need better pads for the track with these Nitto NT01 tires. I plan on doing a lot of AutoX this year and maybe a few HPDEs.

I may end up getting the EBC Yellowstuff again, but I wanted to hear some opinions on the other options out there. I know a lot of people use Hawk HP+. I've never experienced them and I'm not sure what their performance is compared to the EBC Yellowstuff. Does anyone have experience with these on the track?

I'm also looking at Carbotech AX6 pads as they seem to have a good heat range. They also say this is a very popular pad in AutoX. If they have good initial bite in the cold, I may get them.

I've used the Hawk HP+ on my Miata and they were a good dual purpose street/track pad. I think if you DD your car that's the most aggressive pad I personally would go with.

That said, I wouldn't choose the HP+ anyways. Prior to the HP+ I used the Axxis ULT (formerly Ultimate) and it was very comparable in performance with much less dust. I don't think the initial bite was quite as good, but I say that very hesitantly because I did a range of brake upgrades when I switched from the ULT to HP+.

I've never used the YellowStuff personally, but I would be surprised if they aren't good enough to make use of the extra grip provided by the NT01. What is the friction coefficient compared to the HP+ or higher performance pad?

Disclaimer: All of my brake pad experience has been with the lighter Miata, and I haven't been to any tracks that really generate a lot of temperature in the brakes (let's be honest I don't even use them that much haha). The only pads I had on the Speed3 were Hawk HPS and stock. :)

Edit: I'm not sure if this would be an option, but you could also run a more aggressive pad for track days, and switch to something milder the rest of the time. Sticking within the same manufacturer and pad makeup would allow you to use the same rotors. (i.e. Carbotech AX6 for street, and XP12 for track).

you will enjoy the DW's they are fun

HP+ are great on the track (ms6). On the street they take time to heat up and are noisy. Not that you'll be in any danger, but if you want to do some "spirited driving" outside of the track, make sure to give these pads a couple of hard stops before going at it.
I think Yellows are comparable to HPS. Heard good things about those, but they are softer than HP+. Look into Red stuff - iirc they are more track friendly than yellows.

i LOVE my HPS pads not a bad set for AutoX/street but ive heard they cook and cant hold the heat on track as well as you would like
ultimately there really is no GREAT compromise, either good with DD and AutoX and not as good on track or you go better on track but a little loud and noisy on DD

Correct. (2thumbs)

The HP+ aren't that noisy. At least it goes away when they're warm.

I never had any EBC products but I've used both HPS and HP+ on the RX-7. HPS are fine around town if you can stand the slight increase in dust and noise over a stock pad. I used them for one Hyperdrive and had no issues but given what I know about them I'm not sure I'd trust them to a full weekend of HPDE. Before the RX-7 went down I was running HP+ for both HPDE and street. They were fine on track with maybe a hint of fade toward the end when I was getting faster and more confident. That could have been the fluid though. I didn't have any issues driving around town but then again I'm told I brake late. HP+ dust like crazy though and are noticeably noisy even when compared to the HPS.

I think when the RX-7 is up and running I'll stick to HPS for around town and jump to something like Black, Blue, or HT-10 for the track.

I ran HP+ on the miata street and track and never had any issues but I also brake late. If you're coming up to a light and barely pressing on the brakes they squeal like a sumbitch! I managed to lock up the fronts running R1Rs on the street with the HP+ accidentally once lol (panic stop from 60).

HP+ on my neon (2,500lbs) at Gingerman worked perfect, no fade.

HPS on my neon (2,700lbs) at Nelson back in the day worked fine but I wasn't anywhere near as aggressive as I am now (first track day).

I've had HPS's on the silver P5 and HP+'s on the black P5 and the HP+ pads didn't really squeel as much as other people say. Not nearly as much as Phen's MSM, but he's got slotted rotors, IIRC. As far as brake dust, I never noticed any differences since I wash my car every week.

I was going to suggest swapping out pads, like Will said. But I didn't know you had to stick with the same brand to keep the same rotors.

I had powerslots with my HP+, also. Maybe that's the ticket for wicked squealing... Although my ex's neon with HP+ had stock rotors and squealed. Lower pitch but still slightly annoying.

Yeah, the HP+, at least in my case, had a light touch sweet spot and they would squeel. A little more or less brake pedal and they wouldn't. Phen's brakes would drive me nuts. I could hear him braking for the corner at our house. Haha

disclaimer: I don't race so my opinions don't really count. :)

Thanks for the input guys. I may look into running 2 sets of pads. I think I'm going to get the Carbotech AX6 pads and try them out for AutoX and the road. I may find that they're sufficient for HPDE track days. I'm not planning on doing a lot of HPDE this year. Tires are so expensive and the HPDEs eat up a ton of tread.

Also got a quick question about AutoX. If you have a crack in your windshield, do they still allow you to run? Last week, when I got a flat tire on the highway, I was slowly moving over to the right lane to exit the highway. Once I was in the right lane, a semi in front of me kicked up a rock that nailed my windshield. It created a nasty stone chip (3rd chip within the past 2 months!). I went out to my car to go eat lunch and the chip turned into a nasty crack that spans horizontally from the passenger side to about 1/3 the way across the windshield. So...I'll have to get the windshield replaced now. My car insurance has glass coverage, but a $500 deductible. I did a quick quote on SafeLite and it's like $390 LOL fml.
