Protege5: Harder, not Smarter!

No supports welded in while you cut the floor out? Good luck ever getting your alignment right again....frame is going to be all out of wack

Know what I like most about this thread? It dispels any thoughts that a RWD or AWD swap in this platform is at all easy. Ton of work going on here that not everyone has the time, space, tools, or knowledge to do.

Is there any way to mount the FS longitudinally? Maybe a Miata engine is going in there. But that might negate any work done to the FS...

^That's what I'm thinking

T56 is for Vipers, Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs. It's meant to deliver the torque of a V8, not a 4 cylinder making 130hp at the crank. I mean, look at the shear size of it in the car

^^ Truth!

I was thinking about it last night and was really hoping to see a Miata doner car show up in this thread. The Probe that got swapped to Miata running gear was pretty awesome! Obviously, things are going to be on a bit bigger scale here...

The "Smarter not Harder" title of this thread really doesn't make sense any more... This is leaning more and more towards harder lol :D

Can't wait to see this (2thumbs)

You aren't gonna use a T56 for a FWD car...

I'm feeling like an idiot at the moment. If had at all paid attention to the last photo...

Freakin' sweet build, though! Have you thought about doing two engines for a four wheel drive car? That could be pretty cool...

Timing and even power distribution is a huge challenge. Even with electric motors, it's very difficult to evenly distribute the same power to both sets of wheels. After that, you still have to have a custom built/tuned ecu to control it. If you are on the highway with the front axle doing 65mph and the rear axle wanting to go 70mph, you're going to have a bad time

he can square it up when he welds in whatever rear sub frame he decides to use...a Probe GT member did a similar RWD conversion on a probetalk, which shares a lot of unibody dimensions with these cars...Thats how he did it, anyway...
