CX-5 Fuel economy

At 2,000 miles, and four weeks, the computer (and my own math) says 30.3 mpg and an average speed of 43. About half that mileage is interstate, rolling at 75-80. I'm really bipolar driving this car: on long, boring stretches, I turn it over to the cruie control, on roads that are more fun, I kind of flail it a bit.

You may be doing nothing wrong. A funny thing happened on the way to the NAC (National Arts Center) this afternoon while driving in "auto" mode in my GT. Noting that the engine note was a tad high while preparing to take the appropriate exit, I pulled the stick over to manual mode. This changed the gear display from "D" to the current gear selected by the transmission - which was 5 rather than the 6 I was expecting. While in manual I selected 6 and the truck made no objection to shifting to the higher gear.

Have you ever thought to periodically while in operation check the gear the truck has selected for you? Unless of course you own a manual - leaving me to sound pretty stupid.

Brian

I do that very often to check what speed the tranny is on. I work only 16km from my home and by the time i get to work the blue light for motor temp barely have time to shut off. It runs really rich while the light is on, last time i did a long hwy stretch, 200km, i got a really good 7.8l/100km.
But still i was expecting a better consumption than this in short drive, know im on par with my previous Speed3, at least it's not premium fuel.

Did the 2nd fill up this weekend. 1st time was 21+ mpg, 2nd time is 18.7 mpg. OMG. This is calculation using the # of gallon filled divided by the miles driven (not the computer read out). The computer read out this weekend said 20 but it was really 18.7 mpg. I thought the car is good for 24/30. Oh boy. The car spends half the time in local / highway so it's not like it's all stop and go. So far not impress with the mpg at all. Also, not lead foot because it's still in break-in period.

What is your average speed according to the readout? I think that will give us a better picture of what type of driving you do....highway vs city....maybe (rolleyes)

I just drove from Roanoke VA to Norfolk VA - 250 miles trip and my computer shows 33.7 mpg. This is driving on state road at 60mph with dozen stop lights. Considering that my computer is on average only .3 mpg off, that's very nice fuel consumption. This is for 2.5l engine AWD.

Never checked the avg speed. Will check next time. Even if it's ALL local (but it's not), shouldn't it be better than 18.7?

Holy cow, your mpg almost double mines. We have the same car. Even same color. LOL. How many miles you have on your odometer?

I just checked and it said avg speed is 21. I've only filled gas twice. The first time it idled alot so I can check the features. Maybe that's dragging it down? I don't see how I can avg only 21. The morning commute is slow that's for sure. The evening commute is all highway with no traffic. Although both trips are short trips of about 9 miles each way.

Now we just need DareKd average speed.....I think that tells a lot more about the driving and why some get better gas mileage than others. Thanks for the info.

If you are unsatisfied with your mpg, I think a good method is to put the Fuel Computer on INSTANT mpg mode, and monitor it as your are driving normally. When you see the MPG number drop below your targeted avg MPG, take a mental note of what you are doing at that moment, and see if you can adjust your behavior.

There really needs to be 3 MPG numbers on todays cars. Forget the old city/highway numbers. #1: I want a stop and go full throttle full brakes mpg, #2: an average of city/highway numbers mpg, and lastly, #3: the sunday driver/grandma/hypermiler mode mpg.

In which case, using the above methodology, I would give my CX-5 a 22/28/36 mpg, and my Mazda5 a 20/25/31 mpg.

Truth. I live in the same city as Mike and presumably the same environment and even roads. I'm managing nearly 30 avg since January. The average is due to rise to 30+ too given my recent (6th) fill up with an average of at least 31 on the tank.

The only difference is yours is 2013 and mines is 2014 but the difference should only be 1 mpg I think but that's certainly not the case.

My exact thoughts. Do you mind mentioning which roads in NY you often travel on?

Usually Grand Central Parkway when I stay in LI. If Queens, usually on the big boulevards if travelling local (Norther Blvd, Union Turnpike etc). I almost never go out to the city. If I do it's late nights when there are no traffic. I really don't know why it's 18 mpg when I don't even go pass like 3,000 rpm or 3,500 rpm (still new). I will get more on the gas later on so for now I should be getting the BEST of the BEST mpg. Tomorrow, I'll be taking a longgggggggggggggg road trip all highway. Let's see how that goes.

Yes that is quite surprising. I am located in Brooklyn by the Verrazano (far south/west) and travel to and from L.I. five days out of the week. I say at least a fourth of my commute, I am in traffic on the BQE, Belt, and Cross Island. I also use the L.I.E., GCP/NS, and SS on the daily. Mix in some local driving in L.I. and Brooklyn as well.

Seeing our driving trend and environment is quite similar, your avg mpg should be in the low 20's at the very least. I do admit that I try to go as slow and smooth on the throttle as possible without being a nuisance to the flow of traffic. I usually average around 50mph-55mph on the Belt at all times if permitted.

I don't really drive under the limit. I am usually above it on local and highway. For now, I don't stab on the gas pedal and is currently taking it easy. This is my wife's car and she drives it in the morning while I drive at night. The only thing I can think of is maybe she keep hitting the brakes on the commute. Then again when I see her drive, it seems normal. Was expecting to get the cx-5 on avg at like 25 mpg. So far I am no where near that. Like what I was saying, tomorrow I have a long road trip. Curious how it will play out but I won't be driving the speed limit for sure. More like at least 75 to the 80 mph because I just can't drive at the speed limit. LOL. Even that I should at least get upper 20's tomorrow I hope. Will see!

Sometimes I wonder if the issue is me. My car is a G35 and I get 16 mpg. Before that, I also have a Sentra. Yeah an economical car, yet I manage about 21 or 22 mpg.

Mikeee2,

Never reset, and about 1500 (est.) total miles for a 2014 AWD/with Tech (seat heaters on most of the time if that affects it) and my average on the computer is 25.9 which is really close to actual. My average speed is 29mph. That tells me I am in 5th a lot and it mostly city driving for the amount of mileage I do daily.
