This weekend the weather was nice enough for me to install the coilovers. First some install pics.

Rear Springs Side by Side - I separated the springs to mount in the stock location to compete in solo STF

Instructions from ford racing carried over 100% to the mazda2. Total install time took approx. 3 hours, I could have saved an hour with a lift. The rear springs are 8" tall, they fit without issue in the stock location, removing them from the perches and mounting them on the torsion bar meant no more height adjustment. Luckily the Rear springs are tall enough to drop the car approx 1.5 inches. A few zip ties hold them in place when the cars off the ground. I do like that the rears are inverted but feel they should have came with protectors.

The fronts also went in smoothly the height adjustment was set as high as possible this was to match the rear height.

Impressions,

I was fearful that this would be to harsh on the street, especially since the spring rates are so high. After about 30 seconds of driving I was a bit confused, it felt slightly stiffer than stock, The dampening and spring rates are perfectly matched. it absorbs ruts and imperfections very well. Performing emergency lane change was a different story, doing 40 MPH i cranked the wheel to disturb the car and it just responded by snapping me into the adjacent lane. The car felt planted and almost no body roll. I wasn't expecting that.

On my way to work today (commute to NYC) I noticed the car doesn't absorb bumps where both tires are involved, the car "hops" over them and the spring rate is definitely apparent here. Over all I dont think these are for everyone but I am very happy with them.

I wish i could compare them to a different setup, looking forward for the first solo event - Rich.

Is there a reason you did not run the springs on the shocks in the rear?

SCCA Solo STF rules, cant relocate springs, I did test fit them and there are no rubbing issues... if that counts for anything. If I ever do a HPDE or track day ill move them back. it will only take 10 - 15 minutes per side as long as I pre mark the housing for height.

Evening all,

Ok so I'm having a slight issue. I'm getting a clunking sound when I turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. I remember this happened in my 240 but don't remember the solution.

The clunk also makes itself apparent when reversing

Check sway bar bolts that mount onto the tab, on the front strut.

I had a clunking sound going over bumps, and that was my issue.. at least this way, if it isn't the problem, you eliminate one possible issue

That makes more sense, Had me wondering there for a while.

Every car I have owned with coilovers on it made a clunking noise when I went from lock to lock. I just assumed it was the spring popping back into correct place.

Definitely sounds like the springs are shifting.. how tight is the strut mount/pillowball bolt, at the top of the front struts? Tighten it again to eliminate something off the list

I haven't had this problem, on this car, or my old Integra.

Just curious w/o judgement as I have experience with neither: why the Fiesta kit over the Mazda Bilstein B-spec kit?

The Mazda2 b-spec kit cant be purchased separately and there is no info on spring rates and valving at least that I can find. The suspension on both cars are identical. I feel i have much more flexibility with the fiesta kit. The Aluminum top hats are a big plus.

The SCCA GCR has the B-Spec Mazdaspeed parts #s in it per components, here they are as an FYI

Coil over shock kit (Bilstein) 0000-04-2201-BL,
Front springs (ERS) 0000-04-9350-07,
Rear springs (ERS) 0000-04-9250-07,

Thanks Derrick, From what I found (called 3 dealerships including the one I purchased my M2 from) you cant buy the parts a la cart everything is sold as a complete kit. I then asked "what happens if I crash and need a new front left corner" Still waiting for an answer. I figure if its this difficult to get info I might as well buy the fiesta Kit.

The kit isn't 100% without flaws. The front springs are 6" so with the collars all the way up (4 inches of adjustability on the threads) the front still sits lower than the rear by approx 15MM. I dont like the fact that the collars are all the way up so I will be buying some 8" springs and bringing the collars down near the middle. This will give me flexibility to raise the car by 2" or lower it further. Currently the front jack points are 5.5" off the ground

For the rear, I'm going to invest in 500LB 7" springs. they came with 500LB 8" I'll use the 7" for autox since I am not using the collars to adjust height, I would like the rear to sit lower. Doing this will require the front to also come down a bit.

I got it for about $1,100.00 which I thought was great. It's also nice to try something no one else has, They feel 100% fine in the suburbs where the roads are nicely paved and and kept up, taking it to NYC is a whole other story. The spring rates are high and not for all backs.

I believe you could a single from bilstein but it is something you have to make a call to confirm.

That is a good price for the kit.

Problem solved, The car is super quiet now, the springs were binding against the perch, some spray lube fixed it.
