The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

$500 car + $1500 to have a cage made & welded in + $300 seat + $300 fire system + a few sets of wheels + a few sets of tires + fuel + entry fees + helmet + driver's suit + gloves + shoes + nomex underwear + hotel + food + water + spare parts.

A LOT of it is one-time costs, so cost to run gets lower and lower the more you run the car, but if you're just going to run 1 event? Yeah, it's not just $500.

I know it's not $500 and go out there and race :D I was just questioning Pablo's math is all ;)

I don't remember if a "racing license" is required, might be included in the entry fee.

Not required.

Side note, I'd think that we would be able to come up with more than 6 people who would be willing to pitch in and help out in some capacity.

Prices might be reduced if we were to buy a car that has already been in one of those races, that would also save some trouble but it might be banged up. The fire system is not necessary, but its a good safety measure. We would also need regular extinguishers as they are required when refueling.

This. Buying a built car is pennies-on-the-dollar compared to building. And I don't think I'd want to do any serious track work without an actual fire system. They can be hand for cheap enough that I'd rather just pull a handle and bail, rather than have to fumble with a hand-held one as I'm on fire.

I would volunteer to help wrench but I have my own project car with my finances tied up into, I don't want to fund another. Nor do I think realistically many other Ohio members would be able to aid financially. Talk is cheap.

What he said. Maybe if I didn't race SCCA and doing all ofthis extra car work, but this year I'm out for sure.

I live to far away to really help out :(

I might start looking into the GRM challange with a goal of $2016. That's 3 years out so that should give me time to plan and research. With what I plan on doing with the Camaro I could use the old drivetrain & front frame. That puts me at $1 spent so far, $2015 to go.

I wouldn't dismiss the idea, but buying a 'used' chump car might be a good approach to minimize work. Does someone volunteer to troll the interwebz for one?

ebay didn't provide anything

It wouldn't. Try the Lemons & Chump forums. Also, with ANYTHING race related, read the rulebooks before you put down money. The way LeMons and Chump look at $500 is vastly different, and a car legal for one may not end up being legal for the other.

Yes, the rule book has a classification of cars and years that are allowed. Racingjunk is also another resource to look at.

Look around hard enough and you can find people advertising a seat for a nominal charge. $800 will get you seat in my friend's Alfa chumpcar at the VIR race. Of course you have to have your own safety equipment.

I think Will is probably the only cat who has the finances to run a Chump car around here. It's hard enough getting members to chip in a $100 deposit for Mid-Ohio. Realistically, aint no body got money for a chump car series.

I'm not rich at all, I just live within my means. I'll shut up now and you guys can go back to fantasy land with Monopoly money. lulz

Doc has been buying seats lately, he's getting some good seat time
