Brand New CX-5 Dash Rattling....booo

What the sound of the dash rattle? is it always or just over a bump?

The rattle can be reproduced under the following circumstances:

1. Cold morning, during Winter, as soon as the engine is started, I can hear it immediately.
2. When the RPM is > 3000 in first, second gear
3. When going over bumps

Again as soon as the engine/car is completely warmed up, the rattle goes away.

I just made another appointment next week and i am dropping off the CX-5 at the dealership overnight. Hopefully, they can replicate the 3 above mentioned scenario first thing the next morning and get it fixed.

I just started experiencing this rattling, which is disappointing because it is quite loud. Now have three issues to take care of at my first visit to the dealership.

- Hood shaking
- Driver Mirror shaking
- Dash rattle

My dealer in NJ told me per the Mazda techs they need to remove the windshield to add foam padding for this dash rattle, see if they say the same thing. Getting it done next week.

My thoughts, if you would:

1) I've yet to see the hood do anything but precede me in my travels, is it because I'm not tall enough, or sit too low to see past the window gasket (or that my eyes are focused on the task at hand)?

2) I've seen this because it was pointed out here, I've since forgotten about it and concern myself with driving. I do not feel like I need to vomit (as I have heard from some other poster).

3) Turn up the radio! Actually the rattle only seems to be a problem for me when it's cold and when I'm in first or second and with some road conditions. Otherwise the radio masks these minor annoyances.

Update:

Just got the CX-5 back from the Mazda dealership this past Saturday. The dash rattle issue persists. However, the noise level has been noticeably reduced. As per the technician, they have torqued all of the screws and nuts as well as the fender piece mentioned in part 2 of the TSB. That somehow took care of the rattle came from the driver side mirror. I did not get an RO or a service write up this time as they claimed that this visit was a follow up to the previous issue.

I kinda mentioned the foam padding approach to the service manger, but he implied that they will unlikely do it as this is labor intensive.

Perhaps if every 2013 CX-5 owner started complaining about the same issue, Mazda Corp would issue a fix for it.

Or maybe they have addressed this issue in the 2014 model.

This started happening in mine as well the front left side of the dashboard near the speaker is rattling at 650 miles and now its back again at 700 miles. This will be the second time I will bring it back to the dealer. I just scheduled to go in for service tomorrow.

My 2014 has a rattle too! Noticed it the second day of ownership. I haven't pinpointed the exact location yet, but seems like it's coming from drivers door or the drivers side dash area. This is very disheartening and annoying. I hope I can determine the location before my first oil change so I can discuss it (and give specific information) with the dealer at that time. My only other complaint involves the cup holders--they are too deep for a 12 oz. coffee cup. Anyone aware of an aftermarket fix? I may have to create a foam insert. First-world problem.

Had my 2013 into the dealer last week, they ordered parts for some other issues (mirror shake, seat clips for the upholstery) but unfortunately they told me "the dash is plastic, what do you expect" and "it only seems to happen when it is cold and we may have test driven it when it was too warm" so my issues are mainly with my dealer. I have printed the TSB and will bring it to them as well. That is compounded by the problem that Mazda does not reimburse dealers for a loaner, I should have found this out during the purchase, but it was the last thing I would have thought to ask. I really like my CX5, but the ownership experience is being soured by my local dealer.....

Mine has one in a similar area. I've narrowed it down to either the plastic cup inside the spot where the door release latch is or the front of the plastic at the top corner of the door. If I put pressure inside the handle area the noise stops but it also stops if I push against the plastic on the door side between the edge of the dash and the door.

Anyone know how to pop out the plastic insert? I don't want to break it.

That's disheartening to hear. A statement like that is just ridiculous. By their line of thinking all dashes should rattle. The dealership personnel can really make or break the owning experience.

It comes out fairly easily, take a flat plastic tool (or very carefully with a screwdriver) and on the left side pry it outward. There's a screw under there, you may want to tighten it. Also the plastic garnish piece below and to the left of the window switches easily comes out and there's a screw there, tighten that. I found that after taking my door panel off last night and replacing it I had a squeaking noise when I handled the door, I had forgotten to tighten this screw...

I took mine back for the rattling dash and they have partially cured it with the TSB but I still have a rattle directly in front of the driver, around the binnacle area. I looked on the underside and there are 2 screws which I tried to tighten but they just keep turning without getting tighter. It feels like they are too short or even the wrong size. I am sure that if they were tight, my rattle would go away. I am calling in at the dealer on Friday to show them and who knows, perhaps they will fix it!

thanks! I was afraid I'd pry from the wrong spot and break something. I always cringe when removing parts like that because even when they release correctly they still sound like they break.

I got mine back yesterday after Mazda service department did the dash rattle/creak fix per TSB.

So far the creaking/rattle seems to be gone when cold in the morning. I did hear a little bit of (new) buzzing first mile or so in cold morning, I'll see if that persists. I'll wait and report again after serveral cold cycles and a few hundred miles.

I popped things open last night and I think (hope) I found the problem area. Where the plastic door panel meets the metal door there is a guide post towards the front top of the door. It is right by one of the white clips. There is an edge on it where it rests on the door and they put a super thin piece of something there to keep it from rubbing but it wasn't centered perfectly so part of the edge of the plastic would hit the metal of the door. When I added some more padding to it and snapped it back together I couldn't get it to replicate the noise by pulling on the panel like before so I'm hopeful. I didn't drive it today so we'll see.

On a side note on the passenger side the white plastic clip stayed stuck in the metal part of the door. When I pulled it out it fell down into the door panel and as I popped more of the door panel loose more of the clips stayed in the metal part. When I tried removing them most of them broke apart. So now I need a handful of clips to get it back together correctly.

UPDATE: Last 2 mornings all is quiet, so I hope the fix worked as it should.

So when Mazda releases one of these TSB's do the dealers usually go ahead and take care of the cars on the lot or wait for the customer to complain?

They wait for customer to complain typically (normal practice for Mazda and other major automakers), then fix per TSB.

So, I think I discovered the source of my problem. The telescoping steering column which allows for adjustments in both distance and angle of the stearing wheel, has a plastic surround. I have been able to quiet my rattle by pressing on the surround underneath the stearing column. Also, if I'm experiencing a rattle in one position of the stearing wheel/column, I can often alleviate it by adjusting to another position.

Took the car in today so they could sort out the rattle around the instrument cluster, turns out that what looks like screws are in fact just clips so they cannot be tightened. So they said it would need to have the 'anti-rattle' kit fitted - seems there is a kit consisting of foam and double-sided tape etc. I will be booking it in early next week but would be interested if anyone in a country other than the UK (where I am) has been told about the existence of such a kit.
