The car is amazing, all the way around. It is Mazda's masterpiece.
It is beautiful to behold in person, and is IMO one of the nicest exterior designs on a sedan in recent history. I thought the rear end was pretty humdrum and a mismatch with the rest of the car when I saw it in photos, but once the car is seen in person, it all flows so well.
The interior is fantastic. Materials are great, and its design is similar to the CX-5s. Very simple, but functional, quality and elegant. I drove a GT with the off-white leather with red stitching. The seats are amazing great comfort and bolstering. Driver and passenger were power (maybe 8-way?), with driver side featuring memory (something the 2013 CX-5 did not have). Trunk space is great. Can stuff several dead hookers in there. The opening, though, is only average. Rear seats fold at a button's touch.
Also features rear air, which is something sorely missing on the CX-5. A few cubbies here and here, with the same old hideaway cup holders in the center console. Nice center console space, and the center armrest slides fort ward for adjustment and comfort. Good glove compartment space. Paddle shifters are present, and can be used with the shifter in drive, being activated with a flick of the downshift paddle.
Transmission feels awesome. Responds to paddle commands instantly. It is similar to the CX-5's in which it feels very stagey. But mimicking a MTX is definitely a notable quality of its design element. When getting feisty on the throttle, downshifts when decelerating hang RPM right in the meat of the powerband, anticipating rethrottling out of an apex, I presume.
And the engine? Yeah, it is a little buzzy and isn't happy until 3K RPM, but it is NOT an underpowered car. It doesn't feel the way the CX-5 does with the 2.0l. It is plenty potent for everyday driving and the power band is really nice and impressive.
Where this car will melt your mind is in handling and maneuvering and even braking. You will be dumbfounded by its nimbleness. It doesn't matter what I type here, or how I describe it. It just needs to be driven. I encourage everybody here to go take one for a spin on a backroad.
The best part about today is I just showed up to take a look at the new 6. A couple sales guys I know well walked out and tossed me the keys. Drove it sales pitch free and passenger free. What's better than that? This will be my next car. No doubt about it.
