What have you done to your P5 today?

Sorry for not adding to my previous post. Im about ready to start her up, after dinner. Got gas, oil, coolant. Filter is on, plug in oil pan.

The million dollar question I have is, how do I tighten the main crank pulley bolt? The massive one...

I made my own tool similar to the SST listed in the service manual, basically a long bar that bolts to the crank pulley. The other end of the bar rests on the ground so you can tighten the bolt normally.

If you're looking for a more quick/dirty solution, throw the transmission into 5th gear and have someone press on the brake pedal. You'll then be able to tighten the bolt as usual. The service manual says to torque it to 116-122 ft-lbs, I hope you have a decent torque wrench...

5th... I had my mate throw it into 1st. And I do. Have a kobalt one that's way better than the pants orileys generic one.

Should the precat/ j pipe sit flush to the rest of the exhaust? (where the fitting thingy is. Im not too good at splainin) Mines a little far back currently. Idk if it'll be loud when I start it up...

I always just used my impact for the crank bolt. You can fire it up with a header, just to make sure it runs and all that. It's bloody loud though. haha

started her on the first time... ran like poop though. Part of it i know is because i have the exhaust partly un-attatched. There was a good deal of white smoke coming from the gap between the pre cat and rest of the exhaust- to be expected. let it run for a little bit- the temp rose to normal operating temp. I just used straight water and all...

i took the oil cap off and put my hand over it. it was sucking a lot of air. still thinking its the piston rings. probably ****** that up.

i'm about ready to just curl up. it's so annoying having this so close but being so far...

i'm guessing its the piston rings as I didn't tough the valve seals and trust the guy who did those.

I THINK it ran lopey, but i'm not sure. I've tried to upload a video but i haven't managed to just yet.

bleh :(

You're too fond of that impact wrench of yours...

That bolt has to be tightened to 119 foot-pounds plus/minus 2.5%. A decent torque wrench has trouble doing that, wtf are you doing using an impact wrench?

It's one of the few bolts in the service manual with such a tight spec (most are +/- 10-15%), there must be a very good reason for that.

Nick, I'm old. I use my impact for everything. :D

The torque settings are adjustable and the 2nd setting is about 110lbs, I've checked it before with my torque wrench. I did it on my other KL without any issues.

King, hang in there, man. I'm sure you'll get her sorted out. There was bound to be a couple hic-up's and it wouldn't purr perfectly on the first start up. Then you would be wondering why it's purring. heh-heh, keep your chin up. It's a lot of work rebuilding a motor so my hat's off to you, sir.

Haha, I guess you're right :) I think I'll spend this up coming break thinking of possibilities of what could be wrong. The white smoke went away once it was up to temp, that's expected. Im just wondering about the stinking rings. If they're messed up, I'll keep em in. Im not tearing her down any more. Ill try and mate the exhaust up to the j pipe better next weekend too. Gotta work 12-4 today then do homework so im not going to have much time on my hands....

I always hit mine on with an impact. Never had a problem. Its a beefy bolt, so too tight is better then too loose IMO.

Too tight is not better in this case! My neighbour was once of the same opinion ... until the overtightened bolt snapped and the pulley fell off on the highway.

I know american life expectancy is on the decline, but you sir are not old!

Someone as meticulous as yourself shouldn't be guessing torque settings with an impact wrench. Where's the OCD Evan we know and love?

Haha, Nick!

Welcome back Scratch.

Welcome back, buddy!

Hey Hey! Welcome Back!

I heard you were coming back... Nicely done.

wow welcome back!!

Haha...Thanks a TON guys, glad to see some of the same names from the past...I have been given a second chance by the powers that be to come back and contribute to the forum...it is quite the nice gesture for them to allow me to come back, and grateful for it since I did have a rather tarnished history with infractions...back though and positive I will be staying out of the drama and hope to help some of the new guys out where I am able...

who is this "Scratch'N'Sniff" guy?? eh?

Unfortunately im actually one who would honestly ask that question...

Seems like a fine fellow though.

Fine fellow indead...lol...;)...

Welcome back Scratch! Here I thought Cam bought Phen's P5 and it was you....helluva way to get back into the Protege scene. haha So what in the hell has been going on?

Not much, have picked up around 10 Miatas since I left, a few CRV's, a BMW, and a Speed Protege, 2 P5's, and picking up another Speed this week and another P5 at the beginning of January...As for Phen's, I needed a couple parts off of it and got to go up and meet Evan (LewisProtege) and Ivan (fishdontbounce) for a nice little 3AM breakfast at the truck stop...

If you need a part for your protege chances are scratchnsniff has like 4 of them haha

This is still true...I still have quite the stockpile of Protege Parts and still buy lots of items to sell...business has been doing good I must admit...

He traded BThai a spicy MSP for his Silver P5. He just bought Phen's to part out.

Yep, bought StdnDrvr, formerly known as Topher's IIRC Spicy down in Columbus, GA and fixed/cleaned it (<------IT MAJORLY NEEDED THE CLEAN PART), and ended up trading it for BThai's Protege5, was exactly what I was looking for to get back with the Protege's...

Found out how to properly install the exhaust to the j pipe. Did that and it sounded way better. Only thing is, now the smoke's coming from elsewhere!!!

I tried to upload a video but quicktime sucks and i don't like it.

There's definitely a tooth off or something. I think I was on the ball when i had it set up previously (no offense lewis) So I'll try and move it back a tooth- or double check if it's right as of this moment...

when i started it up this time, since i had the camera mounted to a tripod, i noticed that the engine shook back and forth for a second quite viciously. idk if that's a sign of anything???

getting closer :)

like i said, i'll have to check the compression too. i don't know if i should bother since the piston rings probably arent seated just yet.

there is light at the end of the tunnel :)

It might still be off, but Evan was most definitely right in saying that it was off the first time. If you can, please provide pics like last time.

ill probably get to that in a week. not to waste your guys' time. I have break coming up and I'll be cranking down on homework. i has to take the timing belt cover off too and yeah... shapoopie. I think they weren't lined up the second time but i was too insistent on starting the engine up -_-

i'll try and show the teeth too so i can see if the belt can indeed be moved a tooth left or right. Either way, that shall be saved for another day :)

EDIT

I did manage to fix the engine light though :) only thing I changed was reinstalling the VICS butterflys :) im chuffed about that :) and I think that the reason it was smoking still is cause I didnt put all the bolts onto the exhaust mani.

As I said, im almost there :)

I gotta drain the radiator though and actually put my coolant in. Please dont yell at me guys. I didnt think that running straight water would be bad. On the bright side, this means I can flush it out when my pal helps tomorrow. Im not gonna wait till the break to get it running! :)

Sadly, I didn't get a chance to give the P5 one last GOOD wash before the cold hits. We're due for low 40's all week then down into the 20's next week, so I guess I'm stuck with the crappy gas station wash. No good wax to finish her off either. :( Sad days.

Valve cover update: I'm 85% sure that was the main cause for my oil leak. HOWEVER... I thought I smelled some oil burning yesterday, but that could have just been some water mixed with whatever loose oil was still down there and caused a drip onto the manifold or exhaust pipe. I don't recall smelling anything today, but if I smell it again, I fear my oil pan may have a leak. (No, I haven't been under there to look yet... because I'm dumb) When I change my oil on Thursday, I will be looking for any new leaks.

Other than that, gas is cheap for now and the semester is FINALLY over so I can maybe regain some of my sanity over the next 3 weeks. We'll see, I guess!

Anybody know what size load resistor we need for our turn signals? I'm doing my Christmas shopping. I don't have a clue. I'm getting everything from DDM and they have 25ohm/25W, 6ohm/30W, & 6ohm/50W.

?????

Don't post much, but this one is worth posting. Installed a set of 6K HID low beams (HUGE PITA!) and installed some awesome LED's in the instrument cluster:
