Replacement Rear Calipers

Hey all, I tried replacing the rear pads on my 03 protege 5 today, and it turns out one of my calipers is seized and has grinded off some of my rotor already. On the otherside the adjustment gear broke off when I tried turning it with the allen key. So long story short, I'm looking for some replacement calipers. Any suggestions as to where I can find some for a good price. I'm located in Ontario but am willing to order from the states if possible/cheaper.

Thanks!

I get mine from the local auto parts store. Rockauto might be a good option, I am never in the place to wait when I am doing brake work. I'll give you a suggestion...you can extract the adjustment gear if you insert an allen wrench and angle it as you pull out. Try swapping the gears, and before you put the good one in, squirt a bunch of PB Blaster. You might be able to get at least one caliper to work that way. Replacing the caliper just because that stupid gear is chewed up totally sucks.

Thanks for the tip, I did actually pull out the gear as you mentioned by angling the allen key but it looked really chewed up. You think whatever it's adjusting would still be okay if I just put a new one in?

I am sure you can goto Princess Auto in your area for the best price, when you install them you just turn the allen key adjuster just slightly so there is a tiny bit of drag then back it off 1/4 turn and your done.

Would be nice but they don't ship to canada

Well, that being the case I have an extra set of those calipers that Amazon sent me. They should be arriving today (I'm going through the same issue you are) and I can ship to Canada but I'd have to get a quote.

It might...right now you're going to have to replace both calipers, so you might as well see if the one good gear you have will work in the caliper that has the chewed up gear. Like I said, squirt PB Blaster in there first. It may not work, but what do you have to lose?

Cool, please let me know.

Hey whoever makes those door lock gears - make rear brake gears too!

Also, is there anyway to like pack grease in there etc. to try and keep the gear from failing before it happens?

I've wondered about that myself...it's just such a terrible design. I've replaced two calipers on this car in the 40k miles I've owned it, and I have another that I know needs it, I'm just putting it off.
