Well after selling my awesome Spyder which took me two years to set up for STR...

... I decided to get my Mazda 2 to set it up for STF, and I was wondering who else is working on setting up their Mazda 2 's for STF. National Champion Andy Hollis is working on one.

I really want to go after some STF glory. I'd say auto x was one of my main considerations when buying my 2. I take it the rule changes that were purposed for 2012 are a go?

I will be running a 2 in STF. I believe there are 2 other Mazda 2s locally as well.

I used to own a Spyder myself. ;o)

I was looking at the new PAX adjustments and if I apply them to my times from last year I would be in the top 10 in a few of the local events. This solo season should be fun.

s***! Now I have to get the B-spec suspension and have the shocks/struts re-valved! My wallet is screaming for mercy!
Damn you! All of you!

I have been looking at the tires out there for this year and I haven't made a decision yet on what to run. Last year I ran the Kumho EXS tires and they did well. Anyone ever have a chance to run the EXS against another of the ST preferred tires and have feedback?

I believe the srs bzns guys are going to be running staggered setups with 195 toyo r1r's in the rear and wider 205-225 kooks rs3's in the front.

andy hollis says "Used it a bunch during the 2009 and 2010 seasons on the Civic. Very fast, consistent and easy to drive. Eventually decided to just go with the Toyos all-around for contingency reasons. The R-S3 is much easier to drive quickly on the nose of the car than the R1R. Breakaway is more normal, whereas the R1R is a challenge to find the edge (and thus gets overdriven and torn up easily). Bonus is the R-S3 wears like iron and is perfectly fine at full tread depths.

My cool weather setup on my track car (K-swapped CRX) is R-S3 on the front and R1R on the rear. Works great even for 30 minute track sessions. Should easily stand up to the abuse from the nose of a MINI.

So I'm in. My first event is in Feb. Locally it looks like I've got about 10 events this year. Being that it's going to be my first with SCCA, I should have my work cut out for me. I'll be running the Kumho XS's on a set of Konig Britelites (15x6.5) I know that there are better choices out there, but hey, they only weigh 12lbs. According to the 2011 rules for ST, the Corksport rear torsion/sway bar is legit for STF too. So again, I got my work cut out for me. I've spectated at a few local SCCA events, and the level of car preparation is pretty high. I'm going to use this year as more of a learning year and a year to really get back into the sport.

I'll be participating in two events this weekend at Sebring, will see. On old RS3's and 11lb. 15x8 wheels, H&R's no aftermarket sway bars.

That should be interesting for a setup and getting the 2 to rotate. How tight are the courses typically?

Hi guys,

I've been lurking around here for a bit, so time to come out of the closet, so to speak. ;)

Yes, I have a 2012 model that I'll be setting up for STF this year. At this point, I've done exactly nothing to the car except drive it around town daily to get some miles on it (2300, so far). I did autocross it once on my old ST Civic wheels/tires (195 Toyos on 15x7.5" SSR's) and I'll admit it was underwhelming. In stock form, the acceleration is anemic. A lot of that is due to the gearing, which cannot be changed, but there's also a lot of room for improvement in the engine bay. Still making plans on what to do there.

Answering a question from upthread, I believe the optimal setup for the 2 will not be the staggered RS3/R1R that I suggested to the MINI driver at SCCAforums (and was quoted above), but instead an R1R "square" setup. The car can be made light enough, IMO, to allow the Toyos to work without overheating. That's my plan, anyway.

Speaking of weight, my prelims show an easy race trim weight target of 2100 lbs, eventually getting to 2050 by year #2 ($$$). A key factor in that is that the car can be run down to about 2 gallons without fuel starving. We tested that on a race track, and there is also a Mazda Service Highlights notice detailing how the fuel pump/tank/gauge works. In short, once the fuel gauge gets to zero bars, you still have a bunch of fuel left. So I'd start out the day at an autocross at that level.

We are currently working with the good folks at AST/Moton to have some dampers built. This is a busy time of year for them as they are a shock supplier to Grand-Am and the teams are all in winter testing at Daytona in prep for the first race in two weeks. Hopefully, they'll find some time in there for our shocks. Once those come in, we'll get cracking on the rest.

All of our build info will eventually show up at our web site at HollisRacing.com. It's a Facebook page, but you shouldn't have to login to see everything (just to interact). For the moment, it is still all about the ST Civic, but we'll be adding the Mazda 2 stuff soon. Most of the info will be in the "Notes" section.

Dear Andy , I am so glad you posted here, great information like always. We really appreciate it always.

I just had my first Autox with my 2, great car with the mild set up. Will post details later; but for sure we need coilovers, to lower the car more than the H&R springs, also increase the camber on the front.

I tried RS3's on 15x8 and 15x9's also r1r's on 15x8 all these from my Spyder, below 70 degrees temps , so I'm sure you know the results.

Next some 15x7.5 , maybe 15x7 RPF1's if I cannot get the SSR's. About tires, I don't know down here in Fl if the R1R's will do.

Hope using the info from your civic set up ,you can figure out spring rates.

Thanks so much Andy

Andres
