The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

ill give you my rear shocks for cheap, they do have alot of miles on them but they should def. be good enough to tie you over til you have the money to do a proper upgrade

and honestly its a pretty quick install to replace the rears, could knock it out saturday night in time for sundays fun run
(remove rear wheels, 3 bolts and shock will come out, one bolt to take the shock mount off then repeat the process)

You'd be fine if it recently just started leaking, just don't drive like a jackass.

So you're saying I shouldn't drive at WOT and take every turn like I'm in a F1 race? Haha

Ya, I think it just started leaking Monday. On my way in to work, the suspension didn't really feel much different, but I was babying more than usual.

My guess is that this was caused by the bad Ohio roads. I don't think the couple track days I did this year were the main cause (the last one was over 2 months ago), although they might have contributed a little.

I heard the rears are extremely easy compared to the fronts, so I guess that's kind of lucky. Too bad this didn't happen around February 2012, when I might actually have the money to just replace all 4 with coils or better shocks/springs.

I'm sorry but you'll have to abandon the adopted Team Ohio driving style for a little bit...

But seriously, Ohio roads + I think there's something generally ****** up about MS3 suspensions. They seem to blow shocks left and right. Are they the same as regular 3's, or did they upgrade them from the factory? Stiffer springs + 18" wheels + Ohio roads... yeah... I can expect some additional wear on some parts thanks to that, but I'd also expect suspension bits to last longer than that.

Sweet, thanks for the offer man! I'm interested

Are they MS3 shocks or MZ3? Or does it not matter because they're the same?

Ya, I feel like they really skimped out on the shocks/struts. It's as if they put cheap ones on to save money. The functionality of them sucked, as does the quality/strength.

the shocks are different, don't know if you can get away with it for a while. I replaced mine on the speed3 when they started to feel weird, it was @ 30k miles

they are mz3 ones, there is a difference between the 2 (stiffness) but they would bolt up fine...

of course he could get away with, all the added weight is in the front of the car cause of the turbo components, the body of the car is the exact same and with the stiffer speed3 springs (vs stock mz3 springs) its no different than me running the stockers with stechs...

im only proposing a way to safely get by til he has money to upgrade/buy better than oem... i have no doubts that the oem mz3 shocks would work fine on an ms3 for the winter til he has the money to buy new stuff

Morning! well my morning. Just 5 more total days of 3rd shift!

Chris with a 5 day weekend does that mean you're coming to Mid-Ohio?

I swapped my wheels yesterday (put the Black MSR wheels back on to look sexyyy) and I noticed something leaking from the passenger rear. I also noticed there's a stain on the driveway where I park.

Well....when I was swapping that wheel, I investigated the mysterious leak. It looks like it's coming from the strut :'(

Here's where the drip comes off the car and onto the driveway:

Does this mean the strut is blown? I believe Chippy had this issue, but I couldn't find his posts or pictures to compare.

-Thanks

I had the same problem about 3-4 mo. ago. I just went thru mazdaspeed motor sports and got the factory ones. its just 2 bolts on the top and one bolt on the bottom. the hardest part is compressing the shock to line it up it can be done with basic hand tools.

Agreed.

I've probably put about 3-400 miles on my blown/leaking rear left shock. I've definitely noticed differences in the handling but I don't think it is unsafe. Chippy said he drove on his blown shock until it stopped leaking IIRC.

put the silencer on my exhaust, much much quieter. Now all the noise is coming from the engine and I'm wondering if the stick hood would lesson the noise since it has some form of deadener on it...

Nate, is your MSP going to make it this weekend? Did the shop ever call you back?

oh yea, got my car back on last friday, forgot to post that. I'll still have the vac leak :( I just don't think gobbing on a bunch of silicone will fix it even for a temp fix so I'll wait till after mid-ohio to pull the intake off and re-install it to the head with longer bolts

Nice to see a bunch of 3's having the same problem as the 5's.

The 5's are known to blow rear shocks every 30K or so. I really don't think they changed them much if at all from the 3's design.

Nate I forget but do you have poly motor mounts?

Put some new-ish tires on the car today. Bridgestone Potenza RE92s. My Falkens were totally shot and I can't afford brand new. They have about 60% tread left, so they should last me.
